Licata

Licata is situated at the distance of 45 km from the capital of Agrigento. It is one of the main ports on Sicily and a nice place to spend holidays there.

It is situated on Monte Licata Hill at the mouth of the second largest river on Sicily called Salso. About 40 000 people live in Licata. There are many interesting churches there. One of them belongs to Convento del Carmine monastery. The other is the St. Angelo Church where the urn with the relic of the saint patron of the city is kept. There are some rocky churches of Byzantine epoch located in the vicinity of the city.

There are some luxurious mansions and palaces of the 16th-18th centuries: Serrovira, Caro-Dominici, Frangipane and Bosio Palaces. There is located the museum of the relics of Ancient Greece in the building of the city hall.

Costa Licata is the name of the beaches in the vicinity of Licata. They stretch for 20 km along the sea. To the east the beaches are sandy, even and flat. The best are considered to be the west beaches near the small villages of Montagna and Mollarella Polischia. The coast line there is quite rocky. There are picturesque vertical walls of clay soil along the beaches, which are divided by high cliffs. The western coast of Licata is “wild” without any infrastructure. But the advantage is that you may park a car without any difficulty there.

The restaurants of Licata offer one of the best variants of Sicilian cuisine. The sea foodstuffs traditionally prevail but dishes made of meat especially of mutton are really delicious too. You should taste local cheese made of sheep’s milk. The best example of local cuisine is in the La Madia Restaurant. You may have wonderful dinner in pizza shops such as U Marinaru, Armenio Giuseppe and Lido Giummarella.

Licata is situated at one of the busiest navigable ways. The yachtsmen making cruises round Sicily often moor to Licata. A lot of grandiose plans are being discussed now according to which a great port for more than 1000 yachts is going to be built in Licata. Nowadays the port of Licata can receive only 200 yachts.
