Realmonte is a small town 10 km away from Agrigento, which is traditionally popular among tourists. The reasons for such popularity are the closeness to the famous Valley of Temples and one of the best beaches on Sicily.
The main beach of Realmonte is called Scala dei Turchi or the Turkish Staircase in English. Paradise is a very suitable word for this place. Scala dei Turchi is famous for its picturesque cliffs of white limestone. Footsteps have been hollowed out in the cliffs by salt winds and rains for many years. According to the legend Saracuseus used these footsteps to climb to the shore thousands years ago. That is why the name of this place is Turkish. White cliffs of whimsical forms and clean sea water of Realmonte attract thousands of tourists who are fond of swimming and sunbathing. The most beautiful beach of Scala dei Turchi is near the Lido Rossello Bay.
Realmonte is a small town with about 5000 citizens. It was founded by the family of a noble duke Castrophilippo at the end of the 17th century. The most interesting place there is the Virgin Church, which was built in 1700. According to the legend it was built to commemorate a person named Domenico, who allowed building a settlement there. That is why this Church is also called the Church of St. Domenico.
The ruins of the Roman Villa are not far from Realmonte near the Rossello Cape. They are considered to be the other interesting place there.
Summer is the most popular season of the year in Realmonte. But if you want to have calm holidays and to feel the local atmosphere it is better to come to Realmonte in April or at the beginning of May when the sea is warm enough but there are not many people on the beaches.
Realmonte is a rural area. You can eat fresh and ecologically pure food such as almonds, olives, grapes and artichokes which are very cheap there.
Transportation system in Realmonte is quite convenient. If you want to visit the Temple Valley you can go by bus. It will take you 20 minutes. Those who travel by car should know that Realmonte is situated on the national highway SS115 Trapani-Siracusa.
It will take you an hour to go to Palermo, an hour and a half to Trapani and only 10 minutes to Agrigento.
