Casteltermini was founded on 5 April 1629 on the Chiuddia fief by Baron Gian Vincenzo Maria Termini e Ferreri. The historic centre was shaped by a large square with the palace of the town's founder and a long street. Numerous homes and aristocratic residences, as well as churches, were built there. One specific example is the Chiesa di San Giuseppe: it stands at the end of Corso Umberto I, at the top of a staircase.

Archaeology at the “Di Pisa Guardì” Antiquarium

The “Di Pisa Guardì” Antiquarium offers a focused introduction to the history of the area. The first room contains a large archaeological section. The antiquarium also displays a selection of works by Michele Caltagirone, known as Quarantino, the historian Gaetano Di Giovanni and the important educator Giovanni Agostino De Cosmi.

The oldest archaeological evidence dates back particularly far: it comes from Monte Roveto and goes back to the Late Neolithic. The collection also includes Attic pottery from the 5th century BC, considered to be of exceptional quality. Opening hours are a specific point to consider when planning your visit: the antiquarium is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., but closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

Mountain landscape and archaeological sites

Casteltermini lies at the foot of Monte Pecoraro, which rises to 753 metres above sea level. The Eremo di Santa Croce offers another connection with the landscape. It is located about three kilometres from Casteltermini town centre in the green mountain landscape of the Province of Agrigento.

The Santa Croce-Fontana di Paolo archaeological site also leads into the region's past. Three large cisterns containing material from the 6th to 5th centuries BC were excavated there. These examples represent different forms of history: archaeological evidence in the antiquarium, a historic town centre and the cisterns excavated at the Santa Croce-Fontana di Paolo site.

Mining history and regional orientation

The Cozzo Disi Mining Museum was established by Sicilian Regional Law No. 17 of 15 May 1991. It is a remarkable example of industrial archaeology. The Cozzo Disi mine is also located near Casteltermini, between Casteltermini and Campofranco on State Road 189 in the Platani Valley.
