Monterosso Between Volcanic Landscapes and Culture

Monterosso combines the distinctive forms of the Mount Etna area with small churches, historic paths and special nature experiences. The locations described are situated in different local contexts: the route from Viagrande to Monterosso passes through the landscape, as does the panoramic road to Monterosso Etneo, while individual cultural attractions belong to Aci Sant’Antonio. This allows you to shape your stay around landscapes, history and nature experiences.

Secondary Craters and Lava Rock on Mount Etna

Part of Parco dell’Etna lies within the municipality of Viagrande. The hilly landscape at the foot of Mount Etna includes numerous secondary craters. These are small volcanic structures formed by eruptions. A particularly illustrative example is Monte Rosso: the 596 m-high secondary crater cone was formed during the 1329 eruption in the village of Monterosso Etneo. Its volcanic soil consists of red pozzolana, in which layers of sand and pumice alternate.

Monte Serra also displays a distinctive volcanic formation. Its characteristic horseshoe shape was created by the collapse of the crater summit and one flank of the volcanic cone. Near Monterosso, a staircase consisting of around 350 lava-stone steps leads to the summit of Monte Serra. The “Bagolaro di Monterosso” is listed in the village of Monterosso in Viagrande as a monumental and/or centuries-old tree.

Churches and Historic Landscapes

The small Chiesa Sant'Antonio di Padova is located along the panoramic road to Monterosso Etneo. Construction began in 1905, was completed in 1927, and the church was blessed on 14 October 1928 and dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua. The “Le chiese del bosco di Aci” route also takes you to rural churches built between the 17th and 19th centuries that served as centres of community life.

The preserved Bosco di Aci can still be seen in the Monterosso district of Aci Sant'Antonio. Thus, religious buildings and traditional landscapes meet along the routes described, without having to turn them into a single unified area.

Butterflies and Other Nature Observations

The Casa delle Farfalle del Monte Serra is an aviary with tropical plants and flowers where butterflies are kept. A visit includes an educational session about insects and the biology of butterflies. The aviary also houses stick insects, leaf insects and giant beetles. This nature experience therefore complements the geological impressions of Monte Serra and Monte Rosso with the observation of living animals and tropical plants.

Orientation Between Viagrande and Monterosso

A specific route reference is provided by the drive to the Benanti winery: from Viagrande, it leads north towards Zafferana, Etna and Monterosso; outside Viagrande, the winery is on the left side of the road. The route from Viagrande to Monterosso also includes a double bend known as “Arvuru Longu”.
