Villarosa between the Erei Mountains, mining history, and everyday Sicilian culture

Villarosa combines the Erei mountain region with an unusually vivid history of agriculture, sulfur mining, emigration, and rural everyday life. The present-day town center was founded in 1762, after Placido Notarbartolo-Zati received the “Licentia Populandi” on April 10 of that same year. Sulfur mining activity in Villarosa began between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Between the Erei Mountains and Morello

Villarosa lies between the Salso River, also known as the Imera Meridionale, and its tributary, the Morello. To the south of the town rises Monte Marcasita, a 590-meter-high ridge near which the Morello flows. At approximately 761 meters above sea level, Monte Giulfo towers over the built-up area of Villarosa. The area around Lago Morello is currently part of a nature reserve of considerable faunistic interest. This landscape provides a clear framework for the town’s history: mining, water, agriculture, and settlement history can be explored here as interconnected themes, without Villarosa losing its distinctive local character.

Museums between the railway station and the history of the village

The past becomes particularly tangible at the Treno Museo. It is housed at Villarosa railway station in specially converted freight cars and preserves furniture, household items, equipment, tools, and accessories used by the farmers and miners of Villarosa. The museum therefore tells not only the story of individual objects but also makes visible the working and living environment that shaped the town for a long time.

At the Casa Museo Villapriolo, you can see the Casa dello Zolfataio, an original farmhouse from the late 19th century. The exhibition also includes an Italian-Swiss threshing machine from 1955, which was used for harvesting grain. A faithful reconstruction of the Bottega del Ciabattino provides further insight into traditional craftsmanship. Important for planning: visits are possible by prior reservation; groups and school classes can visit the museum from Monday to Friday by arrangement.

The Museo della Memoria is also housed in a historic building. It is located in Villa Lucrezia, a summer residence of an important local baronial family from the 19th century, and displays ethnographic artifacts from the local farming and mining communities. At the railway station, the Cimelio delle Acque from 1876, a water-supply structure, also commemorates the supply of steam locomotives with photographs of the Sorgente Gazzana. The Monumento all’Emigrante contains a mine wagon from the Charleroi mining district in Belgium. Emigrated miners from Villarosa donated it in memory of their departure for mines beyond the Alps.

Churches, festivals, and archaeological traces

The Chiesa Immacolata Concezione stands on the foundations of the 16th-century church of Madonna di Magando. Three marble altars characterize the interior: the central altar is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, while the two side altars are dedicated to the Sacred Heart and the Madonna del Carmelo, respectively. Another religious tradition leads to the Festa della Madonna della Catena. It takes place in a Marian sanctuary on a hill approximately one kilometer from Villarosa’s town center; in the past, it was celebrated as the conclusion of the agricultural work.

For those interested in archaeology, Monte Giulfo is a focus in its own right. The archaeological site there includes a sanctuary where rituals associated with the Thesmophoria were probably held. The settlement on Monte Giulfo dates from the late 7th century to the first decades of the 5th century BC. Case Bastione, a prehistoric archaeological site, is also located in the Villarosa area. The periods of use of the Capanna 5 structure have been dated to between 2500 and 1800 BC.

Sfilici, Vucciddati with almonds and figs, Calinoli, and Mustazzoli are among Villarosa’s pastry traditions.
