Stromboli – Volcanic Island Between Nature and Sea

Stromboli Between Volcano, Sea and Nature

Stromboli is an island for travelers who want to combine a distinctive landscape with specific experiences. Steep slopes characterize the scenery; at Serro dei Vancori, the island rises to 924 meters above sea level. Anyone wishing to hike to the approximately 900-meter-high summit and observe the explosive activity of the craters from a safe distance needs suitable equipment, good health and the company of an authorized guide. The summit experience therefore follows a clearly defined visiting format and cannot simply be equated with an ordinary walk.

Volcanic Landscape and Protected Plant Life

The “Riserva Naturale Isola di Stromboli e Strombolicchio” is an oriented and integral nature reserve. It was established to protect Stromboli’s permanently active volcano, which has been active for at least two millennia. The distinctive plant life includes rare or endemic species such as Cytisus aeolicus, Genista ephedroides and Koekia saxicola; the latter is particularly widespread on Strombolicchio.

The landscape itself also explains the character of the island. The Sciara del Fuoco is a depression shifted and widened toward the northwest, into which ejected material flows. The coasts are generally rocky, steep and rugged. Only on the northeastern side are there short stretches of dark beach. Stromboli is the northernmost island of the Aeolian Archipelago and belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Aeolian Islands. The broader regional context extends to the Aeolian Islands, which are known for the formation and destruction of volcanic islands as well as for volcanic phenomena that continue to this day.

Beaches, Trails and Special Excursions

Three routes are recommended for visiting the nature reserve; each has detailed technical data sheets. This provides a concrete basis when you want to compare different hiking experiences. A different perspective is offered by a boat trip at dusk from Scari to the Sciara del Fuoco.

The beaches also differ considerably. Ficogrande Beach can be reached from the hydrofoil landing stage in ten minutes on foot. It is located in a bay with sand and volcanic rock. Forgia Vecchia, by contrast, is a natural beach with black pebbles smoothed by water and wind. This beach can be reached by land from the nearby beach of Scari below San Vincenzo. When choosing accommodation, you should therefore first consider whether the focus for you is the volcanic landscape, a hike, a beach excursion or the view from the water.

Getting There and Island Towns

Ginostra can only be reached by sea. In summer, Stromboli can be reached from the ports of Naples, Reggio Calabria, Milazzo, Messina, Palermo, Cefalù, Tropea and Vibo Marina. These different starting points make the journey an important part of planning. When looking for accommodation on Stromboli, it is therefore advisable to consider your planned excursions and preferred arrival route together, without reducing the island to just one type of experience.

Information, History and Local Culture

The INGV Stromboli Information Center is located at Marina Garibaldi, about five minutes from the port of Stromboli. During opening hours for the public, the Sala Visitatori provides information about active volcanoes, basic volcanological connections and the geology of the places visited by hikers. The Museo del Cinema di Stromboli is dedicated to the topic “Stromboli negli archivi dell'Istituto Luce” from 1930.

Historical and culinary traces are also part of the island’s character. Historically, pilgrims stopped over on Stromboli every year; most then made an excursion to the crater zone and the summit of the mountain. Stromboli was also historically known for renowned Malvasia production. In this way, the island combines nature observation, volcanic knowledge, beach excursions and cultural discoveries into different travel experiences.
