Valledolmo combines historic buildings, religious art, Sicilian rural architecture and festivals centered around tomatoes, grapes and wine. Historic Places in the Townscape

One of the most prominent buildings is Baglio Castellana, also known as Palazzo Cutelli. The historic aristocratic residence dates back to 1600 and is arranged around a square floor plan enclosing a large courtyard.

The Chiesa Madre di Valledolmo is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was built in the 17th century on the initiative of Countess Cristina Cutelli Joppolo. Inside is a carved and gilded wooden statue of the Immaculate Conception.

The Chiesa delle Anime Sante was completed in 1654. It was blessed and inaugurated by the Bishop of Cefalù and contains mausoleums for Anna Summaniata and Antonio Cutelli. The Chiesa di Maria SS. Della Purità, also known as Chiesa Nuova, has a different architectural character. The three-aisled church is designed in a Romanesque-Baroque style and was built from 1845 onward. It contains a large crucifix from the Civiletti school.

Rural Architecture and the Valley Landscape

The “Acqua della Signora Cristina” bevaio is a historic and cultural landmark of Valledolmo. At the same time, it is considered an example of Sicilian rural architecture. Together with the valley between Pizzo Sampieri, Monte Campanaro and the mountain of Cammarata, this site gives a trip to Valledolmo a clear landscape and regional context.

Tomatoes, Grapes and DOC Wines

The Sagra del Pomodoro takes place from Friday to Sunday during the third week of September. Various tomato varieties are exhibited in Piazza Purità, and tomato-based dishes are available for tasting. The program also includes tomato sauce, the concentrate known as “astrattu” and a traditional Spaghettata to conclude the event.

A visit to the Cooperativa Rinascita in Valledolmo presents the entire tomato production chain, from cultivation to the production of preserved foods. This includes tasting the cooperative’s products. Another culinary highlight is provided by the Sagra dell’uva and the festival of the DOC wines of the Contea di Sclafani. Both take place on the first Sunday in October; the Valledolmo area belongs to this wine region.

A Named Route Through Valledolmo

Valledolmo is also connected to the Magna Via Francigena: it reaches Valledolmo railway station and then continues along the SP 8 toward Magazzinazzo and Valledolmo. Thus, in addition to churches, festivals and agricultural production, the townscape also includes a documented route.
