Calabernardo – Coast, Museum and Maritime Heritage

Calabernardo combines the atmosphere of a seaside village with varied coastal landscapes and a clearly recognisable maritime history. The town is home to a small harbour and a decommissioned lighthouse. At the same time, the coast is predominantly rocky – a feature that gives the town a different character from a purely sandy beach. Coast between rocks, cove and river mouth

One particularly striking coastal spot lies among the rocks near Cala Bernardo: a small, heart-shaped cove called “il cuore di Mala Cala”. The name describes not only a distinctive shape, but also makes clear that the coast here consists of individual, characteristic sections. In front of Calabernardo, the seabed slopes gently. This characteristic should be distinguished from the shape of the coast itself, which is predominantly rocky.

In addition, Calabernardo Beach is bordered by dunes. The mouth of the Asinara River is located nearby. Thus, rocks, a small cove, dunes and a river mouth follow one another within a short distance. This distinction is useful when choosing the focus of your holiday: the townscape does not consist of just one single beach landscape, but of several clearly identifiable coastal forms.

Archaeological coastal route and expansive views

The Itinerario Archeologico Costiero runs from Calabernardo to Eloro along the coast of ancient Neapolis. The route thus connects the coastal town with a landscape shaped by archaeology. This creates a travel context in which the surroundings are perceived not only as a shoreline, but also through their historical classification.

The Torre di Calabernardo offers another perspective. From there, the view extends across the coast and the mouth of the Asinaro River.

Museum and maritime history

The Museo Comunale del Mare in Calabernardo includes museum rooms and artefacts. In addition, the Museo del mare is located in the former Guardia di Finanza barracks in Calabernardo.

The present-day pier also tells of the harbour’s former importance. It was built in 1851 to protect small boats that travelled between the ships at anchor and the shore to load and unload goods. This specific function explains the pier’s place in the town’s maritime history without equating it with modern harbour facilities.

The more recent religious history includes the parish of San Guglielmo, which was established on 10 July 1986. Together with the maritime facilities, the pier and the coastal route, this historical reference broadens the perspective on Calabernardo beyond its purely coastal location.
