Caltanissetta

Caltanissetta is the province of Sicily, which is situated in the heart of it. It is well-known by its sulfur layers. There are no sea resorts in the province, but there are a great amount of possibilities to know better Sicily’s small villages, farms, its cuisine, customs and traditions.

Caltanissetta is also the center of the province. It is the town of the traditional Italian baroque style and it was founded on a hill at an altitude of 600 meters. Its antique name was Nissa, but the Arabian conquerors added their “calat”. Now “Caltanissetta” may be translated as “woman’s caste” and the tourists like it very much.

Caltanissetta is a very cozy and even chamber town. The atmosphere is absolutely ingenuous here. Tourists may even gratify a kitty, which is sleeping on a window-sill. However such spontaneity is natural for the whole Sicily.

Caltanissetta’s monuments are the Renaissance buildings. The St. Agatha Church, the St. Spirit Abbey, the Cathedral and the Pietrarossa Castle have seen many representatives of noble Italian families, such as Medici and Borgia.
