The airports for Sicily are as much important as the sea ports. There are two big airports in Palermo and in Catania. The main airport on the isle is considered to be the international airport Falcone Borsellino in the capital of Sicily. It is named after the two people who were the national heroes of Sicily and struggled against mafia. There is also Punta Raizie Airport in the place with the same name 32 km from Palermo. The most famous air companies on Sicily are Ryanair, Air Berlin, Easyjet, etc.
The second big airport of the isle is Fontanarossa which is situated in the city of Catania. The passenger traffic is the greatest in Fontanarossa. Every year 5mln of tourists fly through it. The Etna volcano is situated very close to a runaway. In May 2007 a new terminal was opened in the airport of Catania.
The main airport in the western part of Sicily is called Vincenzo Florio and is situated in Trapani (TPS). It is also known as the NATO air-base. Nevertheless it is the third airport on Sicily concerning the civil passenger traffic. Every year more than 400 000 passengers fly through it.
There are two small airports on the Isles of Pantelleria and Lampedusa. The greatest Italian air company Alitalia and some private companies organize flights there from such places as Rome, Milan, Palermo and others.
