Caltabellotta amid rocky landscapes, history and Sicilian traditions

Caltabellotta combines a medieval urban fabric with a Mediterranean mountain landscape and an unusually dense succession of archaeological, religious and cultural landmarks. Between the castle, caves and medieval urban fabric

The medieval urban fabric of Caltabellotta is considered typical of a Mediterranean mountain landscape. A staircase partly carved into the rock leads to the remains of the Norman castle of Caltabellotta. The castle was where Queen Sibilla was accommodated and where the Luna family preferred to reside at the time of the “Fall of Sciacca.” This means that the town’s history can be explored not only through dates, but also through specific places.

The caves associated with the cult of the mythical San Pellegrino preserve frescoes, niches and furnishings, as well as two majolica panels from 1579 and 1608. The Eremo di San Pellegrino was built in the 17th century and remodeled and expanded in the 18th century by the hermit Stefano Montalbano. The caves of Caltabellotta are also associated with a living nativity scene held during the Christmas season; this tradition is preserved and renewed every year.

Archaeological traces from the Bronze Age to the Greco-Roman period

At the San Benedetto di Caltabellotta archaeological site, beneath the remains of a Greek settlement dating from the late 6th to the early 5th century BC, there are also remains of an indigenous village from the 8th to the 7th century BC. The Museo Civico “Palazzo della Signoria” houses archaeological finds from the Contrada San Benedetto area dating from the Late Bronze Age to the 3rd century BC. The museum also displays 33 works by Rizzuti made of wood, terracotta and plaster.

Further evidence can be found directly in the townscape and on its outskirts. The Sican necropolises comprise 22 prehistoric rock-cut tombs on the eastern and western outskirts of Caltabellotta. The Grotte di San Cono form a settlement complex inhabited since the Sican period and surrounded by numerous rock-cut tombs. The sacrificial altar of the god Cronus has a double staircase and was used during the Greco-Roman period.

Routes through rocky landscapes and historic centers

One route passes the oldest settlement core of Caltabellotta, Terravecchia. It crosses the Piano della Matrice through an impressive rocky landscape and climbs uphill to the Chiesa Madre of Caltabellotta. This sequence brings together a historic settlement core, striking rock formations and an important church building, without requiring the cultural and historical traces to be considered separately.

Festivals and cuisine as part of the town’s character

The Feast of the Madonna dei Miracoli takes place on the last Sunday in July and traditionally includes the offering of gold by the faithful. The program includes a procession on Saturday carrying the donated gold to the church of Sant’Agostino, the ceremony of dressing the statue, and another procession on Sunday. Those who wish to discover the town’s character through religious traditions will find in it a clearly established annual point of reference.

Local cuisine also has its own seasonal associations. Froscia is a dish prepared in Caltabellotta at Easter with eggs, ricotta, bread, cheese, asparagus and lemon balm. Cuddureddi are Christmas pastries filled with fig jam. Together with the nativity scene, the caves and the summer festival, these foods show how closely culinary traditions are connected to the annual cycle of the town.
