Menfi – Coast, Wine and Historical Discoveries

Menfi combines a diverse coastal landscape with viticulture and a rich succession of historical evidence. Porto Palo is an old, picturesque fishing village at the center of a wide bay. Around Menfi, vineyards, olive groves and hills shape the landscape as they slope down towards the Mediterranean. This allows you to tailor your stay to different focuses: coastal nature, regional wine culture or the history of the town.

Coast, dunes and unique natural features

The Riserva Naturale Foce del fiume Belice e dune limitrofe nature reserve stretches for around 5 km between Marinella di Selinunte and Porto Palo di Menfi. It connects the river mouth area with the adjacent dunes, creating an important natural habitat along the coast. At Solette, you can expect low sandy coves and submerged rocks. There, Mediterranean seagrass meadows promote biodiversity. Individual sections of beach also have a clearly distinctive character. At Capparrina di Mare beach, loggerhead turtles, Caretta caretta, occasionally lay their eggs. Giache Bianche beach near Bertolino di Mare is characterized along the shoreline by white pebbles and a small pine grove. The Porto Palo coastal watchtower was built on the Porto Palo promontory in 1583. For travel without motorized road traffic, the Pista Ciclabile di Menfi is open for use: non-motorized means of transport such as bicycles and electric vehicles are permitted there.

Menfi as a wine and culinary destination

The entire municipal territory of Menfi belongs to the geographically defined production area of DOC Menfi. The DOC includes the wine types Bianco, Rosso, Rosato, Spumante bianco and Spumante rosato. Bianco and Rosso also include varieties such as Vendemmia tardiva, Passito, Superiore and Riserva. At Cantine Barbera, visitors can observe the grape harvest or various stages of winemaking. Another place to experience the regional wine culture is Palazzo Planeta. It houses the Enoteca della Strada del Vino delle Terre Sicane as well as cultural activities promoting wine and local specialties. Inycon is a recurring event in Menfi dedicated to wine, food and Mediterranean culture. These themes are also evident at the Sant'Antonio di Padova festival: It takes place every year on June 13 and includes traditional games, performances and tastings of local products, including wines from Menfi’s wineries.

Historic buildings and sacred heritage

Palazzo Pignatelli was built in 1638 and occupies the site of the former castle of Frederick II of Sicily. The building has two floors with a total of twelve vaulted rooms. A necropolis dating from between 330 and 400 AD was discovered beneath the palazzo. Sixteen graves set into the ground and lined and covered with limestone slabs were uncovered there. Menfi’s origins also date back further: Castello di Burgimilluso was built in the area of present-day Menfi, where Frederick II of Sicily ordered the construction of a settlement in 1238. The sacred and historic buildings also include the Chiesa Madre with a 17th-century wooden crucifix covered with silver foil, as well as the Chiesa di San Giuseppe, built in 1715. Palazzo Ravidà is a Neoclassical sandstone building from the last quarter of the 18th century. The Chiesa del Collegio di Maria SS. Annunziata was built at the beginning of the 19th century. The Chiesa del Purgatorio was built between 1739 and 1769. It was initially dedicated to Saint Anthony the Abbot and has been dedicated to the Madonna della Consolazione since 1947; it is also known as the Chiesa del Purgatorio. The highlight of the Sant'Antonio di Padova festival is a religious procession through the historic center. Menfi thus combines historic townscapes with vibrant religious and culinary traditions. For further research, you will also find Borgo Bonsignore, Fiumenaro, Siculiana Marina, Villaggio Mosè, Santo Stefano Quisquina, Castrofilippo and Villaggio Pirandello.
