Naro – Medieval Village, Churches and Archaeology

Naro on the Ridge

Naro appears as a densely built medieval village stretching along the ridge of a low hill and standing out clearly from the surrounding rural landscape. Its elevated location offers views reaching as far as Mount Etna and the Madonie Mountains, as well as the sea near Licata and Sciacca. The town therefore combines a clearly recognizable historic townscape with broad views across the Sicilian surroundings.

Churches with Special Details

One of the defining buildings is the Chiesa di Maria Santissima Annunziata, also known as the Chiesa Madre of Naro. It was built from 1619 onward on the initiative of the Society of Jesus. The church houses a 16th-century marble sculpture of the Madonna della Catena. The Santuario di S. Calogero is also of interest for understanding the local religious buildings: it is located on a panoramic terrace at the southeastern edge of Naro.

A distinctive feature is the underground church of San Calogero. It contains a black statue of the saint from the 16th century, which also serves as a reliquary for his upper-arm bone. A grotto of the saint carved into the tuff is also incorporated into one of the side walls. The combination of an underground church interior, a statue, and a grotto carved into the rock gives this site a distinctly different character from Naro’s above-ground churches.

Contrada Canale and the Traces of Late Antiquity

The archaeological area of Contrada Canale near Naro preserves a necropolis consisting of four hypogea. Each of these underground tombs is arranged around a long central corridor running from north to south. The largest hypogeum is known as the Grotta delle Meraviglie.

African oil lamps come from Hypogeum B; their disks are decorated with Christian symbols, including the lamb, the Tree of Life, and the fish. Ceramic finds from the hypogea provided evidence for dating the necropolis and attest to the importance of the Naro area in Late Antiquity. Those interested in archaeology will therefore find not only individual relics here, but also a comprehensible connection between funerary architecture, everyday objects, and chronological classification.

Museums, Castello and Local History

The Museo dell'Arte Grafica is located in Palazzo Malfitano. The Castello Chiaramonte has a different focus: it is municipally owned and is currently used as an exhibition space for exhibitions and art events. The permanent exhibition Leonardo's Genius there features around 70 scale models or life-size models of Leonardo’s machines. Visitors can operate the models and observe how they work.

When exploring the town, one specific distinction is important: the Antico Duomo Normanno can only be visited or viewed from the outside. During the Easter season, Naro stages sacred depictions of the Passion of Christ, which are considered the oldest in Sicily. This event complements the permanently visible architectural and archaeological evidence with a religious tradition tied to a specific period of the year.
