Realmonte: White Cliff, Roman Mosaics and Sicilian Cuisine
Accommodation in Realmonte
Realmonte combines a striking white coastal landscape with archaeological traces, an open-air theater and its own culinary tradition. The Scala dei Turchi represents the natural experience by the sea; the Villa Romana, Teatro Costabianca and the dish Cuddriruni offer further perspectives on history, architecture and regional food culture.
The Scala dei Turchi and its coastal setting
The Scala dei Turchi is a white cliff facing the sea, shaped like a natural staircase. Wind and waves have created this formation. The bright, stair-like rock formation and the open seascape come together to create a striking landscape.
The Scala dei Turchi can be reached via Provincial Road No. 68 Realmonte–Porto Empedocle. There are three paid car parks along this road; two more are at the end of Discesa Majata. In spring 2025, entry was permitted only when weather, sea, temperature and general safety conditions allowed. At that time, access was controlled and limited to a set number of visitors, and reservations could be made exclusively by email. Check the current regulations before your trip.
Watchtower and coastal panorama
An old watchtower stands on Monte Rosso. Built in 1453, it was used to observe the sea and look for Saracen ships. Monte Rossello, in turn, is a hill about 386 meters high, with a lighthouse and a viewpoint. It offers panoramic views of the coast and sea.
Roman traces and open-air theater
The Villa Romana is located on Punta Grande beach in Realmonte. It features polychrome mosaics depicting scenes and sea deities. The villa also contains a thermal complex, evidence of the economic prosperity and high social standing of its inhabitants.
Teatro Costabianca is an open-air theater at the foot of a landscape formed by limestone ravines in Baia di Capo Rossello. Its Greek-style cavea is divided into five wedges and two sections; the theater has 17 rows of seats and can accommodate 1,500 spectators. These historic sites tell different stories: the watchtower recalls 15th-century coastal surveillance, while the villa and mosaics offer archaeological insights.
Local cuisine: Cuddriruni
Realmonte’s traditional cuisine is based on vegetables from its south-facing hills and plains and on old country recipes. One specific example is Cuddriruni: the dish consists of two thin layers of dough made with flour and brewer’s yeast, filled with potatoes, onions, peas, extra virgin olive oil and aged Sicilian pecorino. The ingredients and distinctive dough give the local culinary tradition a recognizable character.
