Ribera combines impressive evidence of the past with river landscapes, nature and the coastal town of Seccagrande. Castello Poggiodiana and the Gole del Lupo

One particularly striking place is Castello Poggiodiana. The castle was built in the 9th century by the Saracens under the name Misilcassin and stands on a rocky promontory above the Verdura River valley. The surviving remains include parts of the surrounding walls, a square corner bastion and a 25-metre-high cylindrical tower. This makes it possible to trace both the medieval history and the landscape setting above the river valley in a single location.

The Gole del Lupo are located near Castello Poggiodiana. The gorges were formed by the Verdura River and lie among citrus and fruit orchards. From there, you can enjoy a view of the sea and the Seccagrande coastal area. From Ribera, the Gole del Lupo can be reached by car or on foot via paths from the Verdura Valley. Archaeology, Churches and a Museum of Everyday Life

South of Ribera, in the Contrada Anguilla district, the Anguilla Necropolis was discovered in 1982. It dates from the 13th century BC and comprises artificial rock-cut tombs and chamber tombs. Some burial chambers have a dromos, that is, an access corridor 1.5 to 5 metres long. The tombs are considered unique in western Sicily due to their size and type. The permanent Museo Etno-Antropologico is located in the Villa Comunale. Traditional implements include wooden and iron ploughs, animal saddles, hoes, sickles for harvesting grain, as well as tools for tying sheaves and cleaning freshly threshed grain. The Villa Comunale itself features rare plant species, centuries-old trees and flower-lined paths suitable for walks.

The churches also complete the historical picture. The Chiesa Immacolata in Ribera was built in 1686. Construction of the present Chiesa Madre began on 21 March 1751 and was completed in 1760. Its high altar features an oil painting of the Madonna del Rosario by Provenzani.

Monte Sara and Seccagrande

Monte Sara turns the focus towards nature. Numerous plant species grow there, including the native dwarf palm. The equipped area features a pine and eucalyptus forest, seating for 480 people, ten fire pits and a bocce court. Monte Sara is also suitable for mountain-bike excursions. This allows you to choose between botanical impressions, time spent in the countryside and a more active excursion.

Seccagrande offers a different landscape experience: it is the coastal town with beaches belonging to the municipality of Ribera. Numerous establishments along the Gagarin seafront are suitable for afternoons and evenings. The coast therefore brings its own rhythm to the choice of location, while the Verdura gorges and Monte Sara offer entirely different impressions.
