Santo Stefano Quisquina – Hiking Trails, Santa Rosalia and Teatro Andromeda

Santo Stefano Quisquina combines natural experiences with places connected to the history of Santa Rosalia and rural culture. For planning your day, you can choose from very different trails: from a 680-metre-long, level circular route to a longer mountain route with two ascent options. These include the Eremo di Santa Rosalia alla Quisquina, Teatro Andromeda and an event centred on local dairy products.

Natural area and hiking trails

The protected area of the Riserva Naturale Orientata Monte Cammarata also extends into Santo Stefano Quisquina. 33.19% of the total 2,106.90 hectares lie within this municipality. Those who want to explore the landscape on foot can choose between short paths and more challenging routes. The Sentiero Donna is 680 m long, level and has an elevation gain of 15 m. The stated walking time is 30 minutes. The trail has a car park, a paved path suitable for wheelchairs, a handrail for blind visitors and toilets. This circular route therefore offers a distinctly different visitor experience from the longer trails. The Sentiero della Quercia Grande is 2.2 km long, has an elevation gain of 110 m and a stated walking time of 1 hour and 30 minutes. It passes through a lush oak forest associated with the history and legends surrounding Santa Rosalia. The destination is the Quercia Grande, a pilgrimage site described as a monumental tree. The Sentiero Pizzo della Rondine involves more elevation gain, covering 5.9 km with an elevation gain of 376 m and a stated walking time of 2 hours and 50 minutes. In the upper section, the trail splits into an easier ascent branch and a more challenging one that follows the ridge. Both meet again at the summit; along the way, there are views across large parts of Sicily. For longer hiking plans, the Itinerarium Rosaliae comprises nine stages of approximately 10 to 26 km each. The route also passes through Santo Stefano Quisquina and the Eremo di Santa Rosalia. The Sentiero dei Marcati e di li Cumuneddi begins at Cancello Galluzzo on the S.P. 24 between Cammarata and Santo Stefano di Quisquina, shortly after the turn-off for Buonanotte towards Santo Stefano. It passes through areas of rural architecture and the Eremo della Quisquina.

Santa Rosalia and distinctive cultural sites

The Eremo di Santa Rosalia alla Quisquina was built to protect the first cave in which Santa Rosalia lived. The museum tour presents the lives of the hermits who lived there and includes, among other areas, the cells, kitchen, refectory and crypt. Daily opening hours of 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. are listed for the grotto and sanctuary. Teatro Andromeda provides a completely different cultural experience. From the 1970s onwards, it was built almost entirely by hand by the shepherd and sculptor Lorenzo Reina. Every year, the summer solstice is celebrated there; during the celebration, the sun appears precisely aligned through the opening in the backdrop of the stage. The Sagra del Formaggio is also part of the local experience. At this gastronomic event in Santo Stefano Quisquina, local dairy products are celebrated with tastings and performances. The town's offerings therefore range from tranquil paths through the oak forest and religious history to vibrant traditions.
