Discover Sommatino: Culture and Mining History

Sommatino combines traces of Sicily’s everyday and industrial history with special places for a range of interests. Highlights include the Museo Etnoantropologico, the memory of sulfur mining, historic buildings, a theatrical performance that has been running for more than a century, and the Acquapark Conte. This allows you to focus on museums, architecture, tradition, mining history or a water park.

Everyday History at the Museo Etnoantropologico

The Museo Etnoantropologico, also known as “Invito alla Storia,” is located in the Palazzo Cigno-Costantino in Sommatino. It preserves objects from the agricultural and crafts heritage. The exhibits mentioned include a wooden press and an 18th-century loom. As a result, the focus is not only on individual objects but also on historical areas of work.

The Museo Etnoantropologico also includes a library with a reading room, a conference and video projection room, as well as spaces for temporary and permanent exhibitions. These different areas establish the site as a collection, exhibition venue and space for other cultural formats, rather than limiting it to a single group of objects.

Sulfur Mining and the History of Trabia Tallarita

Another focus is the history of sulfur. Around 1920, Trabia Tallarita accounted for 12 percent of global sulfur production. This figure illustrates the historical scale of this economic sector. At the facility in the Palladio power plant, the offering includes a virtual descent into a mine, a multimedia mining pavilion, animated Tosi engines, exhibits on electricity and a timeline of sulfur history.

The adjoining buildings of the Palladio power plant also house the permanent photo exhibition “Sulfaro e sulfatari.” It explores life in the mine. The Museo della miniera di zolfo di Trabia Tallarita is located on State Road 190, which connects Riesi and Sommatino. This provides a specific road connection between the two towns for orientation.

Torre Civica and Palazzo dei Principi di Trabia

The Torre Civica was rebuilt on the ruins of an ancient watchtower. Admission is free, and the building is accessible without architectural barriers. At the side entrance of the Palazzo dei Principi di Trabia stand two columns that are demonstrably older than the construction of the wall. The side of the Palazzo with this entrance probably led to a large baglio courtyard, typical of Sicily. Here, the word refers to a traditional Sicilian courtyard, although in this case the historical attribution has been passed down as a supposition.

Tradition, Performance and Water Park

“Lu Tuppi Tuppi” is a theatrical performance depicting the Flight into Egypt. It has continued for more than 100 years, with its origins dating back to 1890. Thus, a religious performance maintained over a long period is also among Sommatino’s documented subjects. The Acquapark Conte offers a different focus: it is a water park and visitor attraction in Sommatino.
