Aci Bonaccorsi: Churches, Festivals and Cultural Discoveries

Aci Bonaccorsi reveals its special character above all through its churches, religious festivals and cultural sites. For you, this creates a destination where art, local tradition and traces of history meet within a compact thematic setting. Particularly impressive is the combination of elaborately decorated religious buildings, recurring festivals and institutions such as the Teatro Comunale Leonardo Sciascia and the Museo virtuale delle Aci.

Churches, Paintings and Historical Traces

The Church of Sant'Antonio Abate e della Consolazione is entirely decorated with scenes from the New Testament and figures of saints. It is probably the oldest church in Aci Bonaccorsi. Its first construction phase probably dates back to the 11th or 12th century; in the first decades of the 18th century, the building was remodeled and possibly expanded. Those who pay attention to imagery and architectural history while exploring the town will therefore find more here than just a single attraction.

Other churches also preserve specific historical clues. The Chiesa Santa Maria dell'Indirizzo associates its ecclesiastical independence and its elevation to the status of a church of the Blessed Sacrament with the year 1589. It was not until the following century that the Matrice became a parish church. The façade of the subsidiary Church of Santa Lucia in the Battiati district bears the year 1588. The church in the Lavina district also contains the small slate painting “Maria bambina,” entitled Maria SS. Ritornata, which has become the focal point of Marian devotion in Lavina.

The history of depictions of the Annunciation offers further insights. During the restoration of an Annunciation painting, an inscription band was discovered beneath the painted layer. According to the inscription, Aci Bonaccorsi once had another church dedicated to the Annunciation on the border with Viagrande; at the end of the 18th century, it was the subject of fierce disputes. Another historically significant Annunciation painting was created by Vincenzo Sciuto.

Festivals, Theatre and Local Traditions

The Festa di Santo Stefano combines religious ceremonies with a procession through the town centre. It includes the unveiling of the saint's image, a solemn pontifical Mass, and a procession with the precious statue and relic of the saint. Liturgically, the Festa di Santo Stefano is celebrated on 26 December, and as a major summer festival on 3 August. These two dates mark different occasions within the same festival tradition.

The annual religious neighbourhood festivals are also part of the local character. Typical dishes and sweet treats are prepared and sampled during these events. The Teatro Comunale Leonardo Sciascia provides a different cultural focus. It opened on 29 February 2004 and has 350 seats. Access is possible only during the events announced in the calendar. The event calendar is therefore essential for planning if you would like to experience the theatre.

The “Domeniche di Maggio – Festa di Primavera” includes a crafts exhibition. It complements the religious and historical themes with an insight into local handicrafts. Together with the food and confectionery of the neighbourhood festivals, this creates an image of Aci Bonaccorsi that consists not only of buildings but also of recurring community events.

Museum, Observatory and Further Discoveries

The “Museo virtuale delle Aci” opened on Saturday, 4 June, in the Palmento of the centrally located Palazzo Cutore in the heart of Aci Bonaccorsi. It also serves as a tourist attraction and gives visitors insights into the artistic and architectural features of the Aci area. A public astronomical observatory is located in Parco Lucchesi Ramondetta. The Biblioteca Comunale Luigi Sturzo has a room for conferences, presentations and other activities.
