Aci Catena – Church Art, Archaeology and Landscapes

Aci Catena combines impressive church art, Baroque architecture and the archaeological area of Santa Venera al Pozzo. Those who want to discover Sicily through more than just its major cities will find numerous tangible traces of local history here – from the historic centre to the Reitana Valley and the Santa Venera al Pozzo Archaeological Area.

Churches and Art in the Historic Centre

One of the notable buildings is Palazzo Riggio, known for its carved portal and private chapel. The Santuario di Maria SS. della Catena, also called Santa Maria della Catena or Matrice, holds a special position. It is the largest church in the historic centre of Aci Catena and houses several frescoes and paintings, including “Rebecca al pozzo” by Paolo Vasta. The sanctuary also contains a statue of the Madonna della Catena dating from at least 1630, as well as a fresco from the year 1400.

The Chiesa di Santa Lucia was built in the 16th century and later rebuilt. Its portal, window and staircase are made of lava stone; inside, a wooden coffered ceiling with floral motifs stands out. The Basilica San Filippo d’Agira creates a different architectural accent: its floor plan is shaped like a Greek cross, while the façade is defined by sixteen columns made of stone from Syracuse. Inside, three naves divide the space, and paired Doric columns support the high dome. The furnishings include a silver, tower-shaped ciborium and a handmade ivory reliquary box for the Viaticum.

The 1636 Convento Sant’Antonio da Padova is also part of the centre and, together with Piano Umberto, defines this area of Aci Catena. The lunettes of the cloister are decorated with frescoes depicting the life and work of Franciscan saints. A series of these depictions was created by Giovanni Lo Coco, known as “il sordo di Aci”. The monastery library also preserves valuable incunabula and cinquecentine. The Palazzo della Cultura complements the historic image with a Baroque style typical of the period in which it was built.

Santa Venera al Pozzo and the Landscape

Another focal point is the Santa Venera al Pozzo archaeological area. The site extends across a green hill a few kilometres from the sea and covers approximately nine hectares. The visitor route includes an antiquarium in the former Pennisi residence of the Barons of Floristella. It displays materials from prehistoric times through the modern era, illustrating the history of Santa Venera al Pozzo.

The Reitana Valley in Aci S. Filippo is considered a Greco-Roman valley containing the Santa Venera al Pozzo archaeological area. The Timpa between the hermitage of Sant’Anna and Tavolone has a different landscape character. This landscape area includes citrus groves, Mediterranean scrub and the area of Contrada Giglio. The combination of archaeological history and open landscapes makes it clear that Aci Catena is not limited to a single place in the centre.

A Widely Distributed Cultural Heritage

The artistic heritage of Aci Catena is spread throughout the entire municipal area. Monuments can be found from San Nicolò via Aci S. Filippo to Aci S. Lucia.

CineNostrum is also part of the town’s cultural profile. The summer film event offers audiences the opportunity to meet actors, directors and film critics. CineNostrum was held in the Santa Venera al Pozzo Archaeological Area, thereby combining film culture with an archaeologically significant setting.
