Giarre between Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea

Giarre lies on Sicily’s east coast between Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea. Historic Center and Notable Buildings

In the historic center, streets paved with lava stone, 18th-century buildings, and Liberty-style palazzi shape the townscape. The Cathedral of Giarre is another cultural focal point. The neoclassical church has a Latin-cross floor plan and three naves. Inside there is a painting of the Virgin Mary and the saints by Pietro Paolo Vasta.

The Oratorio is also located on Via Callipoli and is considered the only example of Sicilian Barocchetto in the Province of Catania. The town’s former puppet-theater tradition is also of historical interest: this tradition was once alive in Giarre, and the Teatro-Museo dei Pupi Siciliani of the Compagnia Zappalà is housed at the headquarters of the Pro Loco di Giarre on Piazza Mons. Gardens, Landscape, and Local Specialties

The Radicepura botanical park adds a specially documented garden theme to the townscape. It features a citrus terrace opened in October 2022 with several varieties dating back to the 18th century. These are part of a project to preserve old citrus plants.

Local food culture is also present at events. The Sagra delle Ciliegie e delle Rose, held from June 14 to 16, 2024, featured food stalls as well as a fair for typical products and handicrafts. The date clearly identifies the event as having taken place in the past, while also showing the connection visible in Giarre between regional products, festival culture, and craft offerings.

Experience History and Plan Visits

The Santuario di Santa Maria la Strada is located about two kilometers from the town center in the S. Maria la Strada district, on the main road toward Messina. The building is attributed to Roger the Norman, who had the sanctuary built out of devotion to the Madonna after his victory over the Saracens in 1080.

For groups of no more than 70 people, the museum stages various puppet-theater performances by reservation and for a fee. The Pro Loco di Giarre also offers tourist guide services. This makes it possible to consider historical topics, a specific museum visit, and guided tours as different focal points for discovering the town.

Getting There and Choosing the Right Starting Point

Giarre has an exit on the A18 Catania–Messina motorway. Giarre-Riposto railway station is located on the Messina–Catania–Syracuse railway line. From Giarre, the main natural destinations of Parco dell’Etna, as well as several starting points for excursions and guided tours, can be reached by car in just a few minutes. When choosing accommodation, you can therefore first decide whether proximity to the historic center, a location oriented toward the road to Messina, or access to the natural destinations of Mount Etna should be the deciding factor for you.
