Licodia Eubea: History and Sicilian Tradition
Licodia Eubea reveals its distinctive features on several levels: The town's history includes the ruins of Castello Santapau, Palazzo Mugnos and an impressive rock complex; festivals, relics and local products also shape its vibrant tradition. Those traveling to Sicily in search of culture not merely as individual sights, but as a connection between history, sacred sites and local customs, will find several different ways to explore it here.
Castello Santapau and the History of the Town
The ruins of Castello Santapau stand on a calcarenite elevation and overlook the historic center of Licodia Eubea. The origins of the Castello are generally traced back to the Byzantine period. Its history is also marked by a profound turning point: The earthquake of January 11, 1693 destroyed Castello Santapau; it was never rebuilt. The site therefore does not point to a fully preserved castle, but to the town's historical development and the visible remains of a former fortification.
Grotta dei Santi on Poggio dei Santi
Another facet of the town's cultural history is the Grotta dei Santi complex, a rock formation in the municipality of Licodia Eubea. Grotta dei Santi is located on the hill of Poggio dei Santi in Contrada Alia, southeast of Licodia Eubea. The last cave was converted into a single-room church and features clearly visible frescoes. These include a depiction of the Crucifixion, dated to the 11th or 12th century. The rock chamber, sacred use and medieval pictorial representation form a distinct focus within the town's history.
Palazzo Mugnos between Late Baroque and Rococo
Palazzo Mugnos provides another focal point in the historic townscape. Its main façade on Via Mugnos is of considerable artistic value because of its friezes and belongs to the Late Baroque and Rococo styles. No confirmed construction date is documented for Palazzo Mugnos; the complex is generally dated to the 17th to 18th centuries and was extensively consolidated after the 1693 earthquake. This cautious chronological classification is itself part of the palace's history: The façade is characterized from an art-historical perspective, while the exact construction history is not established by a confirmed date.
Festivals, Relics and Local Products
The Festa Santa Margherita is the patronal festival of Licodia Eubea and takes place on July 20 to commemorate the saint's martyrdom. The celebrations culminate on the feast day in a solemn procession with the relic and a 16th-century statue of Santa Margherita. The July program also includes the first display of the relic, the saint's skull, as well as the pilgrimage to the votive chapel in Contrada Masera. The chapel dedicated to Santa Margherita is associated with a legend. The Festa dell'Uva offers another, culinary expression of local tradition, with tastings of table grapes and local products.
Museum and Further Discoveries
The Museo Civico “A. Di Vita” offers educational activities, meetings and initiatives to promote archaeology and local history. As a result, the cultural spectrum ranges from visible architectural heritage and rock chambers to activities expressly dedicated to exploring the town's past. Families and other travelers wishing to combine different interests can thus consider historical, religious and culinary themes as part of a shared exploration of the town.
