Passopisciaro

Passopisciaro lies on the northern side of Mount Etna in an area with a winemaking tradition dating back thousands of years. The village combines this long relationship with winemaking with distinctive reminders of its history: a neoclassical parish church, old buildings, and special memorial sites. When you choose accommodation in Passopisciaro, you are opting for a destination whose character is revealed primarily through wine, local traditions, and manageable cultural discoveries.

Winemaking and regional features

The revival of winemaking and the rediscovery of the northern Etna region have brought new momentum to the area around Passopisciaro. They have contributed to the development of accommodation businesses and wine tourism involving journalists, industry representatives, and wine enthusiasts. This connection makes the village particularly interesting if you would like to experience Sicilian wine culture not separately from its landscape and local history.

La Colonna is considered, together with the church, one of Passopisciaro’s most representative monuments. The old road marker stands at a significant crossroads in the Sicilian road network and is made entirely of lava stone. It is precisely this combination of a historic road sign and volcanic material that gives the place a distinctive detail. La Colonna is therefore not only part of the village’s history, but also points to the geological character of the Etna region.

Church, square, and local memories

The parish church of Passopisciaro was completed in 1897 after two years of construction. Its neoclassical design includes Ionic and Corinthian columns, a central pediment, sandstone rosettes, the four Evangelists, and an almost entirely symmetrical structure. The church also houses a plaster image of Maria SS del Rosario. The festival in her honor began as a thanksgiving celebration for surviving the lava flows of 1923 and 1947. Natale passopisciarese is also part of the village’s cultural identity as a longstanding local Christmas tradition.

On Ettore Majorana Square in the center of Passopisciaro stands a bronze bust of Ettore Majorana. It was created in 1986 by the artist Carlos D'Agostino. Another historic site is the Casa Cantoniera, considered the oldest building in the village center. The road workers Antonino Palano and Rosario Mascali are said to have lived there between 1870 and 1880. A few meters outside Passopisciaro, in Contrada Santo Spirito, lies the small Chiesetta du protu. It is dated approximately to the 15th to 16th century; its small tower structure and inset columns are characteristic features.
