Petrosino: Spring Trails, Beech Forest and History

Petrosino opens access to a landscape where spring trails, dense beech forest and historical traces are closely connected with travelling through the area. The Sentiero delle Sorgenti leads through different sections and combines nature experiences with the Obelisco di Nelson. In addition, the Ippovia 6 and the Trekking del Santo provide further guidance for exploring the area around Petrosino. When choosing accommodation, you can therefore focus on hiking trails, landscape or culture without conflating the individual experiences.

The Sentiero delle Sorgenti between springs and history

The Sentiero delle Sorgenti follows the old Trazzera Regia. This historic connection was used by herders to move livestock and gives the trail a clearly recognisable past. In the first gently rising section, you will come across the Sorgente Farina. The trail then runs along the Foresta Vecchia area and crosses a dense, impressive beech forest.

Near the Rifugio Donnavida, hikers can take their first break. Further along, the Sentiero delle Sorgenti reaches the village of Serra del Mergo and the Obelisco di Nelson at an altitude of approximately 1,553 metres. The obelisk’s location offers an impressive view of the Nebrodi. In the final section, the trail first reaches the Sorgente Valle dell'Uomo Morto at an altitude of 1,360 metres and then returns to the vicinity of Contrada Petrosino, its starting point.

The Obelisco di Nelson and the Castello di Nelson

The Obelisco di Nelson is not merely a prominent point on the Sentiero delle Sorgenti. It was erected in 1905 by the Duke of Nelson to mark the boundary of the Ducea. Along the trail, you therefore encounter specific historical references that go beyond a mere description of the landscape.

In the immediate vicinity of Petrosino, the Castello di Nelson is identified with the former Benedictine abbey of Santa Maria di Maniace. The municipality of Bronte acquired the Castello di Nelson in 1981. Those wishing to combine nature and history will therefore find two different perspectives on the same regional story here: the obelisk stands along the course of the spring trail, while the Castello di Nelson is connected with the former Benedictine abbey and its subsequent municipal affiliation.

Further trails around Petrosino

An alternative version of the Sentiero delle Sorgenti begins at the sawmill above Porticelle Soprane and can be travelled by mountain bike. This variant is therefore clearly different from the described route of the spring trail. The Ippovia 6 leads through the Bosco Petrosino to Petrosino at an altitude of 840 metres, where a break is possible. On this route, the Bosco Petrosino is also one of the points where water is available.

The Trekking del Santo also has its own distinctive character: After just under 4 km from the Castello di Nelson, the route reaches the entrance to Petrosino. On the right, this is marked by the Chiesetta di San Gabriele. The main road C.so Margherito, which leads to the Petrosino hamlet, is also important for orientation on site.

Local traditions and religious references

The surrounding area is shaped not only by trails and historic buildings. For 1, 2 and 3 May 2026, the municipality of Maniace announced the organisation of the traditional Sagra della ricotta e della provola dei Nebrodi. The name refers to a regional festival tradition centred on Ricotta and Provola dei Nebrodi, without implying that this is a permanent offering in Petrosino.

Another connection arises in relation to the S. Maria delle Grazie celebration: On Sunday, 23 August, a procession of the statue began at the S. Gabriele church in Contrada Petrosino. It ended at the new San Sebastiano parish church in Contrada Fondaco, where the statue remained for veneration for one week.
