San Gregorio Di Catania between lava rock and living culture

San Gregorio Di Catania combines impressive traces of volcanism with churches, processions, and cultural traditions. Particularly striking is the Riserva Naturale Integrale Complesso Immacolatelle e Micio Conti: it encompasses nine volcanic cavities in a lava flow field with Hawaiian morphology. The Immacolatelle complex consists of four caves and shows how differently the formations take shape within this natural area.

A cave landscape with distinctive lava formations

In Micio Conti Cave, the lava flows left grooves on the walls and small remelting stalactites on the ceiling. In the four Immacolatelle caves, lava rolls lie at the foot of the walls, while rope lava covers the floor. These specific geological details give the landscape its own character and make the caves a special subject for anyone who wants to get to know Sicily through more than just its coasts and cities.

The protected natural setting also includes the area “Complesso Immacolatelle, Micio Conti e boschi limitrofi”. By decree dated December 21, 2015, it was designated as a Zona Speciale di Conservazione, or ZSC for short, by the Region of Sicily. For the months of April through mid-June, guided tours were offered in the RNI Complesso Immacolatelle e Micio Conti for adult groups of no more than 10 people.

Churches, processions, and historical connections

The history of the town can also be seen in several churches. The Parrocchia Santa Maria degli Ammalati is a 17th-century church that was restored in the Baroque style after being damaged by earlier earthquakes. At the same time, it is the starting point for all local processions. These proceed along the local streets to the opposite church, dell’Immacolata. The historic procession ends in front of the church; the church of dell’Immacolata was built on the original medieval settlement in honor of San Gregorio Magno.

The Church of San Filippo may date back to the Norman period. The Festa del Santo Patrono San Gregorio Magno is the patronal celebration in honor of San Gregorio Magno, the patron saint of San Gregorio di Catania.

Music and events in the town

The Banda Musicale “Città di San Gregorio” is also part of the town’s cultural identity. It is one of the town’s artistic and cultural treasures and maintains and renews a tradition across generations. The Auditorium “Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa” was specifically designed for public events such as concerts, performances, conferences, and theatrical events.

Another festive landmark is the Giostra Cavalleresca dei Paternò. Before sunset, more than 200 performers make their way to the nearby sports field of Piano Immacolata, where this event takes place.
