San Michele di Ganzaria surprises visitors with its rich combination of archaeology, sacred art, Albanian-Greek history and lively festival traditions. The Museo della Ganzaria offers a particularly vivid introduction: with video screens, multimedia information panels and a virtual reality headset, it enables a virtual exploration of the archaeological area of Piano Cannelle. Churches, Art and Traces of History

The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo combines religious significance with remarkable architecture. It was embellished with stucco and decorations in the 19th century, including frescoes by Francesco and Giovanni Vaccaro from 1835. It is also considered one of the rare examples of Gothic-Cistercian architecture in Sicily. The Chiesa di San Giuseppe is a place of worship built in the 16th century, with stucco decorations in the nave following the Corinthian order.

The Chiesa di San Giuseppe also houses a 16th-century oil painting on canvas. It depicts the Madonna greca di S. Maria di Odigitria; the artist is unknown. The arrival by sea depicted in the painting symbolises the expulsion of the Albanians from their homeland and is regarded as a tangible sign of the municipality’s Greek-Albanian origins. The Chiesa del Rosario also bears witness to several construction phases: it was built in the second half of the 16th century and remodelled in the 18th century. The Chiesa del Monte Calvario was built between the late 17th and early 18th centuries, probably in the late Baroque style.

Only parts of the former fortifications of Castello Gravina remain. These include the surrounding walls, a balcony on the upper floor and a section of the former rampart walk. Historic fountains also add distinctive accents to the townscape. Bevaio Canale Cornu is a cast-iron fountain that was restored in 2025 and returned to its original location. The Fontana di Giambattista Nicastro features a marble group of swans, a basin above it, three spirally intertwined marble dolphins, a smaller basin and a marble finial.

Pilgrimage Route, Festivals and Local Specialities

San Michele di Ganzaria lies on the Cammino di San Giacomo in Sicilia. Pilgrims stop here to rest, have their pilgrim cards stamped and visit the Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo. Another religious tradition is the Good Friday procession, which runs from the Chiesa Madre to the Chiesa del Monte Calvario and is accompanied by the “lamentaturi”. This group of men walks the entire route carrying the coffin of Christ.

The festivals give the town its own annual rhythm. San Giuseppe is celebrated on 19 March. On the Sunday closest to this date, a traditional auction festival is held beside the church for gifts donated to Saint Joseph. After the procession, the traditional “pasta di San Francesco” is offered for tasting in front of the Chiesa Madre. The blessed dish is prepared with peas, young broad beans, lentils, beans and wild fennel. As part of the celebration of Santa Lucia, cuccìa is also distributed, a dish made from boiled wheat seasoned with oil and garlic.

The annual Magico Medioevo festival commemorates the founding of San Michele di Ganzaria in 1534 and the meeting between Baron Antonio Gravina and the Albanian refugees represented by Nicola Bisurca and Antonio Figlia. This highlights a historical connection that also reappears in the art of the Chiesa di San Giuseppe.
