Discover Zafferana Etnea: Mount Etna’s Nature, Trails and Culture

Zafferana Etnea combines the landscapes of Mount Etna with regional culture and distinctive culinary traditions. The municipal area extends from about 400 metres above sea level to the 3,340-metre-high volcanic summit. In between, Mediterranean maquis, lava flows, dense forests and a desert-like summit zone alternate. Hiking trails among lava rock and craters

Zafferana Etnea is considered a starting point for excursions exploring the landscapes and nature trails of the local area. An important access road to the Mount Etna area is the SP 92. It passes through Piano del Vescovo and leads from Zafferana Etnea to the Rifugio Sapienza area. Piano del Vescovo is also the starting point for Trail 727 to Serra del Salifizio.

Trail 727 passes a lava cliff used as a climbing wall and then leads to a ridge of Serra del Salifizio. From there, you can look out over the Valle del Bove. Another described route starts at Contrada Dagalone and runs mostly along an old, partly unpaved mule track. It leads to the Ilice di Carrinu, also known as Ilice di Pantano, a centuries-old monumental holm oak. The tree has also been included in Italy’s heritage of green monuments and is listed among the 150 trees of exceptional historical and monumental value.

For planning several days of hiking, the area offers different starting points: the Piano dell’Acqua–Monte Calanna route branches off Trail 704 at 747 metres above sea level. The junction is less than 800 metres from the trail’s endpoint in the hamlet of Ballo in the municipality of Zafferana Etnea. From viewpoints in Zafferana Etnea, the view extends from Calabria to Augusta; ancient craters and lava flows running downhill can also be followed. One described hiking trail additionally offers views of Mount Etna, the Valle del Bove and the Ionian coast.

Baroque, bees and a distinctive town centre

Zafferana Etnea also has noteworthy attractions away from the trails. The Chiesa Madre Santa Maria della Provvidenza is considered a symbol of Sicilian Baroque. Its façade and the two flanking twin towers are made of white stone, while a black lava-stone staircase dominates the entrance. Inside is an altar dedicated to Saint Joseph with a large altarpiece painted by Giuseppe Sciuti in 1854. The Biblioteca Comunale „F. Guglielmino“ is located in the Palazzina Liberty of the Parco Comunale.

The Casa Museo dell’Apicoltore is dedicated to the millennia-old relationship between bees and humans, as well as traditional honey-production techniques. Zafferana Etnea belongs to the „Città del miele“ association; according to the local tourism information, the town produces about 15 per cent of Italy’s honey. The „Sciatore“ is also a local culinary speciality: it is a milk sponge cake covered in dark chocolate, invented in Zafferana Etnea in the 1940s to provide energy for skiers on Mount Etna.

Cultural events and regional traditions

The summer cultural events series Etna in Scena has presented music, theatre, dance and comedy on the slopes of the volcano for more than 20 years. The history of the Ottobrata Zafferanese also reflects the agricultural and artisanal character of the region. It was founded in 1978 to promote high-quality products from Mount Etna and the surrounding area, including grapes, apples, honey, chestnuts and mushrooms. In the 1990s, traditional crafts were added, such as working lava stone and wrought iron, basket weaving and decorating Sicilian carts.

Booking is required at least 24 hours before arrival.
