Discover Acquacalda on Lipari

Acquacalda on Lipari showcases an unusual combination of bright coastal scenery, a history shaped by pumice stone, hiking trails and vibrant traditions. The white beach owes its color to the presence of pumice stone. This gives the area a distinctive character that can be found not only by the sea, but also in its historical traces and the possible excursions across the island.

White Coast and the History of Pumice Stone

Around 1880, the first pumice stone mills were established in Acquacalda. There, the material was processed into different grades. This history is one of the area's defining themes and adds insight into the former use of pumice stone to the impression created by the landscape. If, when choosing your accommodation, you are looking not only for beautiful surroundings but also for a distinctive local character, this combination of beach and industrial past is an important difference.

Hiking between Monte Pilato and Canneto

One particularly varied route is the Acquacalda–Monte Pilato–Canneto trail. It offers views of the Acquacalda coast, the pumice stone quarries and the Fossa Castagna crater basin. The historical status of the pumice stone quarries should be noted: they have been closed since 2007. The trail also passes through Lami and descends along a stone path to Canneto beach. In this way, the route connects different landscapes without merging them into a single impression of the area. The excursion of the same name takes four hours and has a moderate to low difficulty level.

Circular Tours with Different Highlights

Acquacalda is also part of an interesting route for exploring Lipari on a circular tour. The island tour reaches the area in the north of Lipari and offers a view of the island of Salina. Those who want to discover the island by bicycle can also choose a cycling circuit that passes through Canneto and Acquacalda, continues to the former pumice stone quarries and then leads to Quattropani. The term “former” preserves the historical character of this section.

Another point of reference is the SP179–180 provincial road. It forms a complete circuit around Lipari and is 35 kilometers long.

Tradition on August 7

The Festa di San Gaetano is part of Acquacalda's cultural calendar. The festival is dedicated to Saint Gaetano, takes place on August 7 and is regarded as a tradition renewed every summer. Following the evening celebration, the traditional procession of Saint Gaetano passes through Acquacalda's main streets. This gives the area, alongside its scenery and excursions, a festive moment with a clearly specified date.
