Archaeology at the Museo Archeologico Luigi Bernabo Brea

A special point of interest in Filicudi Porto is the Museo Archeologico Luigi Bernabo Brea. It is housed in a typical two-story island building and comprises five exhibition rooms. The collection features archaeological finds from the Early Bronze Age, dating from the end of the 3rd to the first half of the 2nd millennium BC, as well as from the Middle Bronze Age, dating from the 14th to the beginning of the 13th century BC.

The finds come from excavations in the villages of Piano del Porto and Capo Graziano. As a result, the museum presents not only individual objects but also connections to the island’s prehistoric settlements. For families and other travelers who do not want to devote their stay exclusively to landscape experiences, this museum visit offers an independent cultural focus in Filicudi Porto.

Trails between maquis, coast and prehistoric village

Several trails offer different highlights. Described as slightly difficult, the Capo Graziano trail begins at a bend in the road before Porto and leads through a prehistoric village. The route thus combines physical activity with a tangible insight into the island’s past, without reducing the trail itself to merely a viewpoint.

The trail to Le Macine, also described as slightly difficult, is short and flat. It runs along the northern slope of Capo Graziano and therefore offers a different way to explore the landscape from the trail through the prehistoric village. Those who want to distinguish between a historical destination and a shorter, flat trail when planning their day will find clearly different focal points in these two options.

From Filicudi Porto to Val di Chiesa

The Val di Chiesa – Case dello Zucco Grande route initially leads from Filicudi Porto to Val di Chiesa. It passes through dense Mediterranean maquis before descending toward the coast. The transition between the island’s vegetation-covered interior and the subsequent descent to the coast is what particularly defines the character of this route.

Filicudi Porto, Valdichiesa and Pecorini a Mare are connected by a scenic road. Filicudi can be reached by hydrofoil with Liberty Lines.

Experience Filicudi from the water

The history of Capo Graziano is also present beneath the water’s surface. There are eleven shipwrecks at the underwater site, dating from the 5th century BC to 1943. This time span makes the site an independent historical topic alongside the finds from the excavations on land.

A boat tour around the island of Filicudi takes you to Grotta del bue marino, Faraglione La canna, the islets of Elephant and Montenassari, and Scoglio della fortuna. This allows you to get to know the island from a different perspective than on the trails around Porto, Val di Chiesa and Capo Graziano.
