Furci Siculo – Seafront Promenade, Church History and Maritime Traditions

Furci Siculo combines a striking coastal setting with a multifaceted local and church history. At its centre is the Lungomare di Furci Siculo: it is bordered by the Pagliara and Savoca torrential streams and stretches for several kilometres. Those choosing the town as a travel destination will find a clear scenic focus here, complemented by the Chiesa Matrice, maritime traditions and newer facilities in the town.

The seafront promenade as a defining landscape feature

The Lungomare of Furci Siculo is an important point of reference for anyone who first wants to get to know the town through its coastal setting. The Strada Statale 114 Orientale Sicula is the main route for travelling to the Lungomare: the Lungomare di Furci Siculo can be reached via this road.

Chiesa Matrice and the history of Madonna del Rosario

A second focal point is the Chiesa Matrice di Maria Santissima del Rosario. It was built at the beginning of the 20th century and features a pronounced Gothic architectural style, already clearly recognisable from the exterior. Its institutional history extends beyond the construction period: from 1931, the church became independent and was declared the Chiesa Madre of Furci Siculo.

Its structural development is also documented. In 1957, the Chiesa Matrice was expanded with the construction of the Cappella del Santissimo Rosario; the chapel was completed and inaugurated in 1960. The Madonna del Rosario festival is also part of the town’s religious tradition. The associated devotion has its roots in the 19th century. In 1872, workers from the Antica filanda commissioned a painting of the Madonna from the painter Minutoli; it is still kept in the parish church today. The festival tradition therefore dates back further than the church building from the beginning of the 20th century. The Madonna del Rosario festival takes place on the first Sunday in October.

Maritime collection and newer facilities

The Museo del mare della Pesca e delle Tradizioni Marinare is located in the Centro Diurno on Via Madonna Delle Grazie. Its name alone refers to the themes of the sea, fishing and maritime customs, thereby complementing the coastal connection with a cultural perspective.

Two facilities inaugurated on the same day are among the more recent changes in the town. Parco Furci Verde was inaugurated on 17 March 2023 after renovation work, together with an adjoining cavea. Parco Giochi Inclusivo was inaugurated together with it on 17 March 2023. The Palazzetto dello Sport is also relevant for local orientation: it has pedestrian and vehicle-access entrances, ramps for access by people with disabilities and a large car park.
