Ginostra: Volcanic Landscapes, Coast and Trails on Stromboli

Ginostra’s distinctive character is already evident in its location: the village is one of the two inhabited centres on the island of Stromboli. Stromboli is a volcanic island, a nature reserve and a UNESCO heritage site. Ginostra therefore combines a clearly recognisable village structure with landscapes and experiences closely connected to the volcano, the coast and the trails across the island.

Aeolian architecture and terraced landscape

The houses in Ginostra are built entirely in the strict Aeolian architectural style. They are surrounded by terraced cultivated areas bordered by dry-stone walls. Olive trees and prickly pear cacti grow on these plots. The village can therefore be experienced not only through individual sights, but also through the interplay of its architecture, agriculturally shaped terraces and the island’s volcanic natural environment.

The parish of San Vincenzo Ferreri is part of the local culture. In 1615, an oratory dedicated to San Vincenzo Ferreri was built on Ginostra’s elevated Timpone on Stromboli. Both places provide a cultural orientation for a stay that can be combined with the island’s natural experiences.

Trails to Portella Ginostra and Pizzo

For active exploration, the trail from Ginostra to Portella Ginostra is described particularly specifically: it reaches an altitude of 800 metres, runs along the western edge of the Sciara del Fuoco and continues to Pizzo. From Portella Ginostra, it is possible to observe the eruptive activity of the southwest crater. This route connects the starting point in Ginostra with a high-altitude destination and a direct view of the volcanic activity.

The trail from Punta dei Corvi also has its own distinctive landscape character. It crosses dry-stone walls built for cultivating capers. Along these trails, visitors therefore encounter not only volcanic formations but also traces of the traditional use of the land. For travel planning with different interests, Ginostra thus offers both opportunities to observe nature and culturally shaped landscape impressions.

Volcano, sea and coastal destinations

From Ginostra, a volcanic excursion offers views of the red lava flow of the Sciara del Fuoco, which is particularly impressive at night. Those who prefer to focus on the coast will find the Piscinette near Ginostra. These are natural pools formed when seawater penetrates between the rocks. The San Lazzaro beach is another coastal destination near Ginostra.

The wreck of an old military vessel lies 15 to 20 metres deep off Ginostra. The wreck is therefore another specifically named feature of the seascape in front of the village, without this implying any particular form of access. For orientation on site, it is also important to note that access to the hiking trails on Stromboli, where Ginostra is located, is regulated according to volcanic activity by orders issued by the mayor of Lipari. Swimming and navigation in the waters off Stromboli, particularly opposite the Sciara del Fuoco, are also regulated by orders issued by the harbour authority because of the dangers associated with volcanic activity.
