Milazzo between Fortress, Archaeology and Coast

Milazzo combines an exceptional fortress complex with archaeological collections, rocky coastal paths and the Capo Milazzo marine reserve. Particularly impressive is the Castello di Milazzo with its Spanish walls: together, they form the largest fortified citadel in Sicily. The area also has a very long history of settlement. The Castello stands on a site that has been continuously inhabited by people for at least 5,000 years.

Discovering the Castello di Milazzo on Foot

A tour of the fortress can be combined with several historical discoveries. The sacristy of the old cathedral houses a permanent exhibition with 232 ancient coins. Those who then follow the outer walls of the old Castello reach the Fortino dei Castriciani. The walk leads to this fortification with its panoramic views and combines the historic complex with a path through the grounds.

The Antiquarium Domenico Ryolo is also located within the fortress area. It is situated in the east wing of the so-called Quartiere degli Spagnoli, which was built in the 16th century. In ten exhibition rooms, the Antiquarium presents the archaeology of Milazzo. On display are 1,267 finds dating from the Neolithic period to the Byzantine era. The museum therefore complements a visit to the Castello with tangible evidence from several historical periods.

Baia del Tono and the Paths around Capo Milazzo

At Baia del Tono, the beach curves alongside rocky slopes and cliffs. From the bay, a path follows the rocky coastal slope to high cliffs. Baia del Tono also has a historical distinction: because of its natural characteristics and location, it was once chosen for the construction of the largest tuna-fishing station on the northeastern coast of Sicily. This use belongs to the past and should not be confused with a present-day operation.

From Baia del Tono, you can also board ferries to the Aeolian Islands. For further orientation around Capo Milazzo, it is important to know that access to the marine reserve is free of charge. It can be reached by car or on foot. Those arriving by car reach the hilltop and then descend on foot to the sea. The marine reserve encompasses the Site of Community Importance SIC ITA030045 Fondali di Capo Milazzo.

A nature trail at Capo Milazzo leads to the natural rock formation Piscina di Venere. This means that different experiences come together along the same stretch of coast: views of rocks and cliffs, a path down to the sea and a distinctive natural formation as the destination.

Churches and Visible Traces of the Past

The historical side of Milazzo also includes the Chiesa di San Francesco di Paola. It was founded around 1464 by the saint of the same name. In the Duomo Nuovo – Chiesa di Santo Stefano, you can see two matching panels from the 16th century attributed to Antonello De Saliba. Opposite the main façade, the remains of a late Roman and Proto-Byzantine necropolis are also visible. They date from the 5th to the 7th century AD.
