Mitta: Village Center, Gole Ranciara and Culture

Mitta combines a historic village center with a striking landscape and cultural destinations in the Casalvecchio Siculo area. The village lies at an altitude of 410 meters above sea level and is about 10 kilometers from Casalvecchio Siculo. Those looking for a place for a trip combining different interests, between nature, sacred history, and winding routes, will find several clearly distinct points of interest here.

Village Center and San Sebastiano

Mitta is listed in the landscape plan of the Sicily Region under code NS_20_09 as a historic settlement center. A specific point of reference in the village is the parish church of San Sebastiano on Piazza Chiesa in Mitta, Casalvecchio Siculo. As early as the 18th century, Mitta had a church dedicated to Saint Sebastian. The celebrations of San Sebastiano lasted for two days. At the end of the celebrations, a procession took place with the recently restored simulacrum of Saint Sebastian. The historic town band of Casalvecchio Siculo also played in the small streets of the hamlet during the celebrations.

Gole Ranciara and Early Energy History

In the nearby Gole Ranciara, the landscape appears as the result of a long natural process: the gorges formed over centuries through the erosion caused by the waters of the Fiumara d’Agrò. The Gole Ranciara lie on the border between the territories of Casalvecchio and Limina. Thus, the gorge landscape does not belong solely to a narrowly defined local setting but also points to the larger surrounding landscape.

On the left bank of the Gole Ranciara, in the Mitta area, the ruins of one of the first power stations built in Sicily can still be seen. It was built by the Mastroieni family. This combination of water erosion, gorge, and technological history gives the area an unusual historical dimension in addition to its connection with nature.

Culture in Casalvecchio Siculo

Within the wider context of Casalvecchio Siculo stands the church of SS. Pietro e Paolo d’Agrò. It dates from 560 AD and was restored in 1172. In addition, the parish museum preserves works of art, tools, and household items that would otherwise probably have been scattered.

Among the preserved objects is a white liturgical vestment from the 17th century, finely embroidered and decorated with gold and coral. There is also a silver monstrance from 1684. The museum also displays evidence of the peasant and pastoral culture of Casalvecchio Siculo, including a stone grain mill and a larger mill with gears dating from 1700. This means that a visit can be explored not only through church architecture and sacred art but also through the history of work and everyday life.

Altitude, Roads and Guided Trails

The SP 020 di Mitta provincial road is important for locating Mitta geographically. It connects the SP 019 with its endpoint in the hamlet of Mitta in Casalvecchio Siculo. The road runs between 377 and 456 meters above sea level.

The “Valli Joniche dei Peloritani” route also passes through Mitta. It is 60 kilometers long and has more than 70 hairpin bends. In a broader regional context, the Sentiero Vernà lies between Antillo and Casalvecchio Siculo. It is a guided hiking trail; the tree species found there include Douglas fir, alder, and Atlas cedar. In a broader regional context, at the foot of Pizzo Vernà there is a forest reserve that is a site of community importance.
