Moio Alcantara – Culture, Trails and Landscape

Moio Alcantara combines a compact historic town centre with a landscape of vineyards, olive groves and citrus orchards. Among narrow lanes, old churches and paths into the surrounding area, it offers a destination where you can discover history, local traditions and a volcanic landscape in a variety of ways. Particularly interesting is the combination of small cultural sites in the town and excursions around Monte Mojo and the Alcantara Valley.

Historic Town Centre and Sicilian Culture

At the Museo Etnografico, you can see objects and tools used by Sicilian farmers between the 19th and early 20th centuries. The museum also includes a faithfully reconstructed traditional farmhouse with authentic furnishings and details. This means that you encounter not only individual exhibits, but also a vivid representation of rural life in Sicily.

The Parrocchia Santa Maria delle Grazie is the mother church of Moio Alcantara and is one of the most significant local places of worship. The church houses a wooden crucifix attributed to Frate Umile da Petralia. Every year, it is honoured during the solemn procession of the Festa del Santissimo Crocifisso. Just a few steps from the mother church, the ruins of the S. Antonino chapel are also visible.

Moio Alcantara was officially founded in 1602, when the royal authorities granted the licentia populandi. Those who follow the Tindari Trail also pass through the historic S. Antonino quarter during its first stage.

Monte Mojo, Crater Landscape and Trails

Moio Alcantara lies on an alluvial plain near Monte Moio, one of the smaller craters associated with Mount Etna. From the area around the sports ground, you can reach Monte Mojo via a narrow, gently sloping path. From the summit of Monte Mojo, visitors can walk around the crater and see the Alcantara Valley from Francavilla to Randazzo, with Mount Etna in the background. The surrounding area therefore offers a clear contrast between local history and expansive landscapes.

The Sentiero Vulcanetto di Mojo begins in Moio Alcantara and is classified as moderately difficult. Another option is the Tindari Trail: its first stage is 22 km long and leads from Moio Alcantara via Malvagna to Montalbano Elicona. The trail can be completed entirely independently. A short detour from the first section takes you to the Cuba, a small Byzantine chapel known as a trichora. The Tindari pilgrimage attracts hundreds of pilgrims every year, who cross the Peloritani Mountains on foot.

Festivals, Cattle Fair and Peaches

The events calendar also reflects the close connection between the landscape, agriculture and local tradition. At the Sagra delle Pesche, you can sample fresh peaches and culinary specialities made with peaches. The Fiera di Mojo is one of Sicily’s oldest cattle fairs and takes place in the last week of September. The two events each have their own focus: one centres on the taste of local produce, while the other highlights the historical importance of the cattle trade.
