Panarea: Volcanic Landscapes, Archaeology and a Small-Scale Island World

Panarea is the smallest and lowest of the seven Aeolian Islands and, geologically, also the oldest. Together with the surrounding rocks and islets between Lipari and Stromboli, it forms a kind of archipelago within the archipelago. This creates a destination where nature observation, volcanic landscapes and archaeology can be experienced within a small geographical area. Volcanic Landscapes and Mediterranean Nature

The Riserva Naturale Isola di Panarea e Scogli Viciniori has been established on Panarea as a managed nature reserve. The surrounding rocks are designated as an integral nature reserve. The geosites include the fumaroles and mineral deposits of Calcara. There, vapours and gases emerge from the rocks and seabed, forming columns of bubbles visible at the surface.

Underwater, too, volcanic activity remains a defining feature: In Panarea’s underwater crater and along the rim of the caldera, gases emerge continuously at shallow depths, forming impressive curtains of bubbles. At depths of more than 70 metres, the recently discovered site “The Smoking Land” consists of numerous hydrothermal vents that emit acidic fluids at high temperatures. According to UNESCO, the volcanic landforms of the Aeolian Islands are considered classic examples for the ongoing study of volcanology.

On suitable paths, the Mediterranean maquis characteristic of Panarea can be observed in the nature reserve. It includes tree heath, mastic, strawberry trees, myrtle, Montpellier cistus, white cistus, as well as fragrant and thorny broom. Cala degli Zimmari offers a different landscape: it is Panarea’s only sandy beach and is known for its reddish sand. Cala Junco can be reached via a panoramic path, adding an explicitly named access route to the island’s distinctive coastal sites.

Archaeology from Punta Milazzese to Basiluzzo

At Punta Milazzese, on Panarea’s southern side, a prehistoric village lies on a Tyrrhenian marine terrace at the upper edge of a cliff. The site directly connects the island’s history with the landscape in which it has been preserved. The small centre of San Pietro also has a branch of the Museo archeologico di Lipari. It displays finds documenting Panarea’s history from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age.

The first exhibition room of the Museo Archeologico Luigi Bernabo Brea presents the island’s geological, volcanological and natural-history aspects, as well as its historical chronology. Panarea–Basiluzzo is also designated as an underwater archaeological trail, or underwater archaeological route, in Sicily.

Choosing a Location and Getting Around Panarea

Cars are not permitted on Panarea. However, motor scooters, bicycles and Ape cars can be rented for getting around the island. This rule is a specific factor when choosing your accommodation, because it means that getting your bearings depends not on travelling by private car but on the island’s available means of transport. The other two districts, Drautto and Ditella, can be reached on foot or by Aeolian taxis. These are wheeled carriages used to transport people and luggage.

In Contrada San Pietro, a thermal spring emerges with a temperature of up to approximately 50°C, which the islanders use for therapeutic purposes. Together with the small centre of San Pietro, the paths to Cala Junco, the coastal landscapes and the archaeological sites, this provides a clear basis for choosing your accommodation according to your preferred focus when exploring the island, without presupposing specific distances or accommodation features.
