Discover Pettineo: History, Art and Sicilian Festivals

Historic Places and Buildings

The Castello dei Ventimiglia has historical origins dating back to the 13th century. Only a few remains have survived; they are visible from a distance as you approach Pettineo. The Convento dei Cappuccini represents a different historical period, having been founded in 1579. Its holdings include a seed greenhouse consisting of eight basins, described as the only one of its kind still preserved in Sicily. The monastery also houses a late Baroque altarpiece with the painting “Madonna degli Angeli,” created by Guglielmo Borremans in 1722.

The Chiesa di San Sebastiano was built after 1580 on what was presumably an already existing sanctuary dedicated to the martyr. It was rebuilt as a three-aisled basilica with colonnades, capitals, arcades and windows. The Statua della Costanza stands in Piazza Duomo, an allegorical statue representing strength. The sculptor and engineer Geronimo d’Ajeni from Pettineo created it in 1639.

The Torre Migaido complex includes a fortified structure from the 14th century with a keep and a chapel containing frescoes of Christ Pantocrator. The Ponte Migaido was built in 1750 by the architect Giovan Battista Vaccarini. It was a historic crossing on the Antica via del Grano between the Tyrrhenian Sea and central Sicily.

Festivals, Art and the Limone Seccagno

Cultural life is also expressed through the festivals. At Easter, Pettineo celebrates “u scuontru,” the traditional meeting of the images of Mary and the risen Jesus Christ in the centre of the square. The patron saint’s festival is celebrated in May with the traditional “vutata di l’Altari.” This includes an evening procession carrying the image of Sant’Oliva through the town’s streets. The Festa Madonna della Pietà also includes a procession: the image of the Madonna is carried through the main streets of Pettineo’s historic centre.

The Sagra del Limone Seccagno di Pettineo is held every year. The Limone Seccagno di Pettineo is included in Sicily’s list of traditional agri-food products (PAT). It is cultivated with significantly less water than the average citrus crop in Sicily. Another distinctive feature is the monumental olive tree of Innari, which is more than 800 years old.

Contemporary art is also part of the townscape. Andrea Buglisi’s mural “Flusso dinamico” is located on Via Credenza in Pettineo and presents sport as a means of inclusion. The Museo Domestico connects visitors and residents through contemporary artworks kept in private spaces.
