Raccuja: Culture and Landscapes of the Nebrodi

Raccuja lies in the Monti Nebrodi area and combines a varied mountain landscape with an unusually rich local history. From Raccuja, the mountain panorama stretches across a landscape ranging from low hills to the mountains of the Nebrodi. Local History Between the Normans and Historic Buildings

The origins of Raccuja date back to the late 11th century, when the Normans came to Sicily and conquered the island. Castello Branciforti stands in the upper part of the built-up area. The extensive rectangular complex consists of a two-storey linear building and has a two-storey circular tower at the northeastern corner. Its location was important for controlling the nearby Regia Trazzera.

Several religious buildings complete this historical picture. The Chiesa Madre – Santa Maria del Gesù is a 16th-century church. The Chiesa di San Pietro was built around an old medieval tower. The Monastero di San Nicolò dates from the Byzantine period and was rebuilt during the Norman era. On Piazza XXV Aprile, you stand among palaces from the 17th century and a valuable staircase from the 18th century made entirely of sandstone.

Silk Processing and a Route to the Tholos

The Museo della Seta is dedicated to the area’s silk-processing tradition. It presents the historic artisanal silk-processing tradition of the Monti Nebrodi and is also designed as an educational and identity-forming place for rediscovering this economically significant craft. The museum offers free guided tours, which take place exclusively by prior reservation. In this way, Raccuja’s silk tradition is given not only a historical perspective but also a clearly presented local one.

Another facet of the town is revealed by the Itinerario delle Tholos. This natural and cultural route leads to small, typical rural buildings known as “casotti.” Their origins are traced back to the pre-Greek period. The route’s form is important to bear in mind when planning: the Itinerario delle Tholos is not a walkable, well-marked nature trail. The individual tholos structures vary in how accessible and reachable they are. It is therefore not a single, uniform walking route, but rather a route with several separate destinations.

Local Specialty in August

The local cuisine also draws on the area’s traditions. The Sagra dei maccheroni takes place in August and offers the opportunity to try artisanally prepared specialties of the local cuisine. Raccuja’s traditional specialty is presented as thread-like egg pasta with pork sauce and salted ricotta. In this way, the festival tradition complements the historic buildings, the silk museum, and the tholos with a culinary perspective on the town.
