Acquedolci: Grotta di San Teodoro, History and Festivals

Acquedolci combines exceptional evidence of prehistory with distinctive buildings and vibrant local traditions. The Grotta di San Teodoro is particularly significant: the cave opens in a rock face 140 meters above sea level and represents a long history of human settlement. It is also the earliest and most important site providing evidence of burials from the Upper Paleolithic.

Grotta di San Teodoro and Traces of Prehistory

The Grotta di San Teodoro offers several points of reference from different periods. In front of the cave lies a Pleistocene lake deposit dating back approximately 200,000 years. It contains thousands of remains of the hippopotamus Hippopotamus pentlandi Meyer. The more recent deposit in the Grotta di San Teodoro provides evidence of human settlement dating from approximately 15,000 to 11,000 BC and is attributed to the Late Epigravettian. The significance of the site therefore extends from natural history to human history. The two deposits mark two distinct periods: a Pleistocene animal world and human settlement in the Late Epigravettian. The Upper Paleolithic burials add another aspect of early human history to this chronological evidence.

The Antiquarium Comunale displays paleontological and prehistoric finds from the nearby Grotta di San Teodoro. The groups of finds represented there connect natural history with human prehistory, complementing the cave as an archaeological site with a museum presentation of its own.

Historic Buildings in the Town

Another focal point is the Baglio del Castello, also known as Castello Larcan-Gravina. It is a fortified complex dating from the 17th to the 18th century. The Baglio del Castello contains the Chiesetta di San Giuseppe, which dates from the 16th century. The church was restored in 2004 and has a late-Baroque Sicilian altar as well as antique majolica ceramics. Another important construction date concerns the Chiesa Madre: its foundation stone was laid in 1926, and the building was completed in 1928. While the Baglio represents a fortified complex, the Chiesetta, as a church, belongs to a sacred architectural context. The Chiesa Madre dates from a significantly later construction period than the two buildings within the Baglio. Together, these buildings create a clearly distinguishable picture of different periods in the town's history.

Traditions and Festivals

The events calendar is also shaped by long-standing customs. The Carnevale Acquedolcese has a very old tradition and is accompanied by various folkloric events. The celebrations of San Giuseppe take place on the third Sunday in May, or on the Sunday following the historic Fiera di Acquedolci. This historic fair takes place every year on May 14. Thus, both a movable festival date and a fixed annual date form part of the local calendar of customs. Those who choose Acquedolci can explore archaeological themes, local history, and traditional festivals in different forms.
