The Torre di Roccalumera and Its Literary Heritage

One particularly striking historic building is the Torre di Roccalumera. It was built between the 14th and 15th centuries to protect the southern entrance to the Ionian village. During the late medieval Aragonese period, it served as a coastal outpost. Its shape and preserved architectural details also make the tower interesting from an architectural perspective: it is cylindrical and well preserved. One window features a pointed, flattened arch framed by limestone and black pumice stone. The Torre di Roccalumera houses the “Salvatore Quasimodo” Literary Park. It was established recently to commemorate the years Salvatore Quasimodo spent in Roccalumera. In addition to the town’s architectural and defensive history, this gives it a literary connection as well.

Crafts, Mining and the Limone Verdello

There were numerous mines in Allume where potassium aluminum sulfate was extracted. The Filanda Papandrea is a preserved testament to the former silkworm breeding industry in Roccalumera. Both topics broaden the perspective beyond churches and towers. Work, processing and regional economic sectors are also part of the town’s history. You can encounter a culinary tradition at the now-established Sagra del Verdello in Sciglio di Roccalumera. The event is held in honor of the Limone Verdello and includes tastings as well as an entertainment program with cabaret and music. It thus combines a local product with a sociable cultural program.
