Vulcano Piano – Nature, Trails and Craters on Vulcano

Vulcano Piano reveals a quiet and strikingly scenic side of the island of Vulcano. The village lies in a large, horseshoe-shaped depression open to the northwest, at an altitude of around 330 metres. From here, nature, trails, geological traces and destinations on different sides of the island can be combined. When choosing the right location, it is therefore especially interesting whether you mainly want to explore the landscape around Piano, Capo Grillo, the crater slopes or the southern side with Gelso.

A distinctive plant world around Piano

At elevations between 350 and 400 metres above sea level, the endemic Aeolian broom grows in Piano. The rare plant is locally called “sgubbio” and was formerly used for construction work. It therefore combines a botanical rarity with a piece of local history. The area around Passo del Piano also has extensive stands of rockroses. Holm oak forests grow around Piano, while Capo Grillo north of Vulcano Piano is characterised by extensive reforestation, mainly with pine and eucalyptus trees. Those who want to compare different landscapes during their stay will therefore find not only volcanic landforms here, but also woodland and scrubland.

Trails to Capo Grillo, the crater rims and Gelso

A footpath leads north from Vulcano Piano to Capo Grillo. A path also branches off from the road to Vulcano Piano and climbs up to the crater rims. These two directions offer different experiences: the reforested areas of Capo Grillo lie to the north, while the route to the crater rims highlights the island’s volcanic character. The road from Vulcano Piano also leads to the southern side of the island, reaching the small village of Gelso. Gelso is known for its lighthouse and beach.

The Gran Cratere La Fossa was the site of Vulcano’s last historical eruption, which lasted from 1888 to 1890. For more than ten years, a living nativity scene has been held in the Ferlazzo Grotto. The area around Vulcano Piano thus brings together landscape history, religious architecture and an enduring local tradition.
