Roccavaldina invites you to combine architecture, art and local history with an active exploration of the surrounding area. From a Renaissance loggia and paintings in churches to an e-bike route overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, there are very different themes to consider when planning your trip. Decide whether you want to focus on architecture and historical details, or also take in the route’s panoramas.

Discover architecture and works of art

Castello dei Valdina has a Renaissance loggia connecting its two sections. The baronial wing of the palace also deserves a closer look: its style bridges the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The loggia and the transitional style each tell a different story about the architecture of the castle.

You will find two works with distinct stories in the Duomo. The panel painting Madonna di Termini was painted by Angelo Chirico. The main chapel also houses a statue of the Madonna delle Grazie, created in 1566 and attributed to Andrea Calamech. Construction of the present-day Duomo probably began around 1505, after an earthquake destroyed the earlier Chiesa di GesĂą e Maria.

Other churches also preserve notable details. Chiesa Madonna della Catena was built around the year 1000. Architectural ornaments made from embedded pieces of roof tile decorate its outer walls, bell tower and façade. Chiesa di Gesù e Maria houses a painting of Jesus and Mary attributed to the school of Camarda. If you are interested in sacred art, consider these distinctive motifs and forms of decoration as separate highlights of your trip.

Traces of craftsmanship and local history

The ceramic vessels at La Farmacia were modelled in 1580 in the workshop of Mastro Antonio Patanazzi in Urbino. Their provenance connects an object in Roccavaldina with a named artisan and his workshop. Casa Vermiglia houses a collection of contemporary art, which originated as a donation from the painter Nino Cannistraci Tricomi. Different forms of artistic creation thus sit side by side in the town’s history.

The Antico Lavatoio recalls an everyday practice: women from Roccavaldina used it until the early 1970s. The Antico Palmento reveals another aspect of local history. It preserves an old stone mill with a single large millstone. Oxen or mules moved the stone, which was used to grind olives. There are also two large wine presses and the vessels used to collect the must. It was then taken to cellars and stored in barrels. The mill and presses illustrate the different stages of olive and wine production.

Historical images and panoramic views

The Sala Immersiva offers a different kind of experience: fully touch-sensitive walls reveal historical images of Roccavaldina through a virtual mist. Each photograph is accompanied by audio fragments, including stories from oral memory and carefully recreated ambient sounds. Images, voices and sounds provide a sensory way to connect with local history, unlike viewing historic buildings.

If you would also like to explore Roccavaldina by bike, an e-bike route starts at the Polo Olivettiano di Roccavaldina. It follows gravel roads, technical sections and stretches of paved road. Along the way, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Aeolian Islands and the surrounding valleys. The varied route and its viewpoints give it a different character from exploring the town’s art and history.

When choosing your accommodation, you can first decide what you want to focus on: churches and works of art, traces of everyday life in the past, the Sala Immersiva or the e-bike route. This lets you plan your trip around the experiences that interest you most, rather than combining different excursions into a single route.
