San Marco D'alunzio – Culture on Monte Castro

San Marco D'alunzio lies at the summit of Monte Castro in the Parco dei Nebrodi. From here, the town overlooks the Tyrrhenian coast from Cefalù via Capo d'Orlando to the Aeolian Islands. Those interested in a trip combining culture, landscapes and diverse discoveries will find an unusually rich combination of ancient remains, medieval history, churches, museums and local festivals in San Marco D'alunzio.

Ancient and Norman History

A particular attraction is the Tempio d'Ercole, a Greek temple dating from the 4th century BC. It is considered an important example of classical architecture in the Messina area. The temple stands on a rocky ledge opposite the town of San Marco D'alunzio and is in good condition. Its rectangular in antis plan includes a pronaos and Doric columns.

The ruins of the Norman castle on Monte Rotondo also reach far back into the town's history. Roberto il Guiscardo had the complex built from 1061 onward on the remains of an older castle. Due to its strategic location, the Ruderi Castello Normanno served as an important military outpost for controlling and dominating the Tyrrhenian coast from Cefalù via Capo d'Orlando to the Aeolian Islands. The ruins can be reached on foot from the beginning of Via Roma via Via Castello; the ascent along Via Castello is approximately 500 m and is considered free of architectural barriers.

Museums and Churches in the Townscape

The Museo della Cultura e delle Arti Figurative Bizantine e Normanne is housed in a former Benedictine monastery. Its sections are dedicated to archaeology, Byzantine-Norman art and the Middle Ages in the Nebrodi. The archaeological collection includes, among other things, an altar dedicated to Augustus, a Corinthian terracotta capital and finds bearing Greek and Latin inscriptions. The Byzantine-Norman art section displays valuable frescoes depicting the four Church Fathers of the Christian East and a reconstructed cycle of images from the apse of the Norman church of S. Salvatore extra moenia.

Another perspective is offered by IDEA, the first science museum in the Parco dei Nebrodi. It is located in the historic Palazzo Crimaldi and offers more than 30 interactive wooden exhibits and around 100 geometric origami models. Mathematics and physics are taught there in a playful way, giving natural sciences their own place alongside religious art, archaeology and castle ruins.

The churches include the Chiesa di San Giuseppe, built from the 16th century onward, with a single-nave plan, six side chapels and a Baroque portal with Corinthian capitals. Since 1996, it has housed the Museo di Arte Sacra. The Chiesa di San Basilio contains a wooden statue of Saint Basil the Great from the 17th century, created by the Li Volsi family from Tusa.

On Piazza Aluntina stands the Fontana in marmo rosso San Marco, built in 1897 from local red marble. The Chiesa di Sant'Antonio is a single-nave church from the 17th century with a valuable façade made of San Marco red marble. Inside are a 15th-century statue of the Crucifixion and a painting by Damiano de Basilio from the late 16th century depicting the Madonna with angels.

The Chiesa Maria Santissima Aracoeli was built in the 12th century and reconstructed and extended in 1494 and 1630. The procession in honor of the crucifix kept there is considered to have been established in 1612. In the medieval quarter stands the Chiesa Madre San Nicolò di Bari, which was built between 1584 and 1800. It contains twelve 16th-century side chapels furnished with paintings, wooden statues and other valuable works of art.

Festivals, Wine and Regional Traditions

The events calendar combines local tradition with wine and crafts. WOOD takes place every year on May 1 in the heart of the Parco dei Nebrodi. San Martino Nel Borgo includes the “Vino Fatto in Casa” competition, the Mastro Vinaio Aluntino, which was held for the fourth time in 2024. The event also includes tastings of selected wines from Sicilian, Italian and French wineries.

The Giornata Medievale includes a wine tasting, a medieval aperitif at the Taverna del Borgo and a market for handcrafted products. During the Festa del Crocifisso, 33 veiled penitents, known as Babbaluti, carry the crucifix in a procession. Together with the historic ecclesiastical heritage, this creates a townscape in which religious tradition, crafts and culinary themes stand closely alongside one another.
