Savoca: History, Rocky Landscape and Film Location

Savoca is nestled in the rock of a twin-peaked hill and brings together historical traces, striking landscapes and a touch of film history within a confined area. For families and other travelers who want to experience culture alongside nature, this creates a varied picture: churches and medieval remains stand alongside hills, woodland, rock formations and viewpoints. Churches and Medieval Traces

One of the notable buildings is the Chiesa San Michele. It dates from before 1250 and served as a place of worship for Castello Pentefur. Two portals in the Gothic-Sicilian style, with sandstone arches, give the church a distinctive architectural character. It therefore tells not only the story of its own construction, but also has an explicit connection with the castle complex.

At the foot of the hill on which Castello Pentefur stands are the ruins of the medieval synagogue of Savoca’s Jewish community. These were already present in 1408. Another historical landmark is the Porta della Città: the city gate dates from the 12th century and has a pointed sandstone arch. Together with the churches, it makes Savoca’s past visible in several parts of the town, without the individual testimonies telling the same story.

Paths, Art and Film History

The Stations of the Cross leads from the Capuchin monastery through the streets of the historic center to Monte Calvario. Some of its stations are carved into the rock. The route thus combines religious history, the townscape and the characteristic connection in Savoca between the built environment and natural rock.

The 16th-century Chiesa di Gesù e Maria is the only surviving architectural testimony in Savoca to the work of the brotherhood of the same name. Today, only its surrounding walls remain; inside, valuable floral friezes in the Baroque style can be seen. The Centro Filarmonico in the historic center offers cultural and musical activities and serves as a meeting place for people interested in music and art. Another widely known facet of the town can be found at Palazzo Trimarchi: Bar Vitelli was recreated there for the filming of The Godfather.
