Militello Rosmarino: Local History and Festival Traditions

Militello Rosmarino lies with its historic center on a hill above the valley of the Torrente Rosmarino. The town’s layout alone makes this Sicilian town special: the medieval-influenced plan is divided into two areas connected by a narrow corridor. The oldest part of the historic settlement lies around the Norman Castle. In 1371, Militello and its castle were confirmed once again – an indication of the town’s long history.

Churches, Art and Hidden History

The Duomo di San Biagio, also known as the Chiesa Madre di Militello Rosmarino, is at the center of the religious and art-historical experience. The present-day Chiesa Madre dates back to alterations and extensions carried out in the 18th century; a church dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Myra already stood on the same site in the 15th century. Above the main altar is a painting of the Immacolata by Giuseppe Tomasi, dated 1672. The furnishings also include a wooden crucifix from the late 16th century, a work by the Li Volsi masters from Tusa.

The crypt of Militello Rosmarino lies beneath the Chiesa Madre. It contains mummies of 18th-century personalities, as well as painted wooden niches and sarcophagi. This gives the church a remarkable historical depth alongside its visible works of art. The town’s other churches include the Chiesa di San Domenico, built at the end of the 15th century at the instigation of Enrico Russo. The Chiesa del Rosario was established from 1484 by the Barone Rosso family; a Dominican monastery was later added to it. The Madonna col Bambino by Pietro Novelli is another significant work of art in the churches of Militello Rosmarino.

San Biagio and the Town’s Living Traditions

The traditional Festa di San Biagio is also celebrated on February 3. It includes the named traditions “SCIARA CA RAMA” and “CANNIZZOLI”, which take place in the town’s streets. A special procession is A Sciara: between January and February, before the procession of San Biagio, children carry bundles of burning wild reeds through the streets of Militello Rosmarino. The ancient Processione del simulacro di San Biagio follows the main street; a characteristic element is the “running of the saint.”

L'ottava di San Biagio also has its own customs. During the procession, it stops on the spot to sample a dish of mortadella, salted sardines, bread, olives and red wine. Another old tradition is to go to a hill in the Contrada Cuttunaro. The ancient Abbey of Santa Maria Lo Brignolito is opened only on the occasion of the Festa di San Biagio. Those interested in other local performances can also experience the Presepe vivente dei Nebrodi, an additional tradition whose first edition took place in 1998.

Landscape, Ancient Paths and a Rare Pastry

Outside the historic center, Militello Rosmarino also reveals distinctive traces of its landscape and culture. Monte Scurzi is a steep, 484-meter-high, cone-shaped and completely barren mountain. Traces of a protohistoric settlement have been identified on its summit. Numerous Trazzere and mule tracks cross the area, forming a network between the town center and the rural settlements. Scattered throughout the area are also the remains of water mills, reminders of activities that have since disappeared.

The Pastizzottu di Militello Rosmarino is another part of the town’s local character. The pastry contains cocoa in its filling and is covered with a layer of egg white decorated with chocolate. It is considered particularly tasty and nearly extinct – a detail that makes the town’s culinary heritage just as vivid as its churches and festivals.
