Belmonte Mezzagno

Belmonte Mezzagno combines a distinctive religious and historical heritage with a diverse landscape. At the heart of the town are the Chiesa Madre – SS. Crocifisso and its history, while the Monte Grifone area reveals an underground karst landscape with caves, rare vegetation and wild vertebrates. Church, history and religious traditions

The Chiesa Madre – SS. Crocifisso was built between 1752 and 1756 by Prince Giuseppe Emanuele Ventimiglia. Inside is a large crucifix, created around 1772 at the initiative of Giuseppe Emanuele Ventimiglia. There are also two paintings attributed to the school of Pietro Novelli. The church therefore combines tangible evidence of the town’s history with works of art from the Sicilian cultural sphere. The town’s origins are also linked to Giuseppe Emanuele Ventimiglia: in 1752, he received the “licentia populandi” for Belmonte Mezzagno. However, the earliest documented indications of settlement date back to the 13th century. At that time, the place was probably a feudal estate inhabited by farmers at today’s Piazza Martiri d’Ungheria, known as “U bagghiu”. The religious calendar is also firmly rooted in the local character. The feast of the SS. Crocifisso, the patron saint of Belmonte Mezzagno, takes place on the second Sunday in September. On Easter Day, the religious congregations organise the traditional “Incontro” between the Blessed Virgin Mary and the risen Christ; these congregations have been part of the local faith community since 1810. Another local tradition brings residents to Pizzo Belmonte, also known as Santa Croce, every year on 3 May to commemorate the Passion of Jesus Christ. The religious calendar also includes the blessing of animals in honour of San Francesco on 4 October.

Monte Grifone and the karst landscape

The Natura 2000 site, also known as SIC ITA020044 Monte Grifone, includes Contrada Valle dei Muli, also known as Valle di Belmonte, as well as other areas within the municipality of Belmonte Mezzagno. The Belmonte Mezzagno area features an underground karst landscape with numerous caves, which develop predominantly vertically and along the main tectonic fractures. The most important caves are located on the ridge of Pizzo Neviera at an altitude of around 850 metres. They include the Grotta delle Sette Camere, the Grotta dei Laghetti, the Zubbio di Pizzo Neviera, the Zubbietto di Pizzo Neviera and the Pozzo Fiandra. The caves contain stalactites, stalagmites, eccentric sinter formations and calcareous sinter deposits. Alongside the visible history of the town, the geological formations provide a distinct focal point. The fauna and flora are also part of Monte Grifone’s documented character. In some areas, the site features distinctive vegetation with numerous endemic or rare plant species of significance from a phytogeographical perspective. Rare or endangered wild vertebrates are also found there. Water and local craftsmanship

The Stagnone, also called the Museo dell’Acqua and dedicated to Paolo Borsellino, is a large water reservoir. It was built to address the water shortage affecting the population of Belmonte Mezzagno. Its history thus points to a specific community task and complements the town’s religious and architectural heritage. The Antico Molino Piraino is also part of the local heritage. The old stone mill was brought to Belmonte Mezzagno in 1922, opened in 1928 and remained in operation until the 1960s. A project of the Antico Molino Piraino envisages reviving the old stone mill there to produce flour from ancient Sicilian grain varieties. Resuming production is a plan, not an operation that has already taken place.
