Ginestra: Memorial, Nature Trails and Mountain Landscape

Ginestra combines an impressive culture of remembrance with paths leading into a distinctive natural landscape. A central cultural point of reference is the Memoriale di Portella della Ginestra. It was recognised as a site of cultural interest because of its historical significance and as a unique testimony to collective identity and the history of institutions.

A memorial of particular historical significance

The memorial is located in the hamlet of Portella Ginestra within the municipality of Monreale. The site of Portella della Ginestra has been listed in the Register of Sicily’s Intangible Cultural Heritage under number 132 since 15 September 2010. At the same time, the memorial is considered Italy’s first land-art project. Large boulders reminiscent of menhirs are arranged around the Sasso di Barbato, giving the memorial site a distinctive spatial form.

Trails into the Serra della Pizzuta

The area also offers several clearly distinct options for active days. The Sentiero della Pizzuta is 4 km long, starts at Portella della Ginestra and leads to the southern slope of the Serra della Pizzuta nature reserve. This allows a visit to the memorial site to be combined with a walk through the landscape, without merging different destinations into a single circuit.

In the nearby Serre della Pizzuta nature reserve, the summit of Pizzuta reaches an elevation of 1,333 metres. Karst processes have created the Zubbione and Garrone caves there, with deposits and sinter formations, two small lakes and a significant bat colony. These natural features give the surrounding area a geological and biological diversity that extends beyond the individual summit.

Another route is the Sentiero delle Neviere, which leads as far as the hamlet of Strasatto-Ginestra. Along the way, you can park the car near the Targia watering trough and follow the Sentiero Italia markers through the northern valley of the mountain massif.

Further local points of interest and regional discoveries

The local character also includes the Agriturismo Portella della Ginestra in the Serra della Pizzuta nature reserve, established in a former 18th-century farmhouse. The cuisine uses organic products from Libera Terra and wines from Centopassi. At Contrada Ginestra on the SP 34 at kilometre 4.2, an Ecostruttura is located at the Centro Ippico Giuseppe Di Matteo. It was intended as an open space for cultural promotion and educational programmes on legality in the Alto Belice Corleonese area and beyond.
