Caccamo: Castle, Nature and Sicilian Culture

Caccamo combines an impressive Norman castle with church art, historic districts, nature trails and the expansive waterscape of Lago Rosamarina. The Castello di Caccamo is particularly prominent: it is one of the largest and best-preserved Norman castles in Sicily and Italy. The Cathedral of San Giorgio is set into the rock at the foot of the castle, making the close connection between the landscape and architectural history immediately visible.

Castle, Churches and the Oldest District

Around Piazza del Duomo, the Chiesa dell’Oratorio forms part of a Baroque monumental complex. The Cathedral of San Giorgio was founded by the Normans in 1090, restored in 1477 and expanded in 1614. Inside, it preserves a baptismal font and a ciborium top by Domenico Gagini, a painting by Mattia Stomer, works attributed to Jan Van Houbracken, sculptures by Laurana and historic sacred furnishings. The cathedral received a baptismal font from the Prades in 1477.

Other churches add to this rich cultural heritage. The Chiesa di Santa Maria degli Angeli houses a marble Madonna and Child by Antonello Gagini and a silver urn containing the mortal remains of Blessed Giovanni Liccio. The Chiesa di San Benedetto alla Badia features an 18th-century majolica tile floor attributed to Nicolò Sarzana. Vaults, emblems, angels, garlands and a ship between the waves shape its design. From Tuesday to Sunday, the church is open in the morning from 09:00 to 12:30; in the afternoon, visits are possible on Mondays and/or other afternoons from 14:30 to 18:30 by prior reservation.

The Chiesa dell’Annunziata has medieval origins and was built in several construction phases. Its older left bell tower was created from a projecting tower of the Castello di Caccamo. The Convento di San Francesco has a 16th-century cloister, while a permanent exhibition on peasant culture offers further insight into local history. Terravecchia, Caccamo’s oldest district, places these discoveries within a historic townscape that has grown over time.

Nature Trails, the Lake and Active Excursions

Beyond its churches and castle, Caccamo opens onto a variety of landscapes. The Monte San Calogero Nature Reserve also extends into Caccamo and includes holm oak forest as well as remarkable animal communities. Several nature trails lead through lush vegetation and wildlife to panoramic viewpoints; one of them is located in the Monte San Calogero Nature Reserve. Another trail runs from the Abbazia di San Nicola de’ Nemori at the foot of Monte Eurako, now called Monte San Calogero, to the summit of Monte San Calogero. It passes through pastures, holm oak forests and Mediterranean scrub.

Lago San Leonardo was created following the construction of the Rosamarina dam. Lago Rosamarina, also known as Diga or Lago di Caccamo, offers sailing, windsurfing and canoeing. Horse riding and mountain biking are also available at the lake. Because of the clear water, underwater fishing is possible about 800 metres from the dam. Alongside visits to the churches and castle, Caccamo therefore offers water-based and landscape experiences as distinct attractions.

Via Francigena and Religious Traditions

Stage 4 of the Via Francigena leads from Caccamo to Montemaggiore Belsito through the plains of the San Leonardo and Torto rivers towards the Madonie mountains. At kilometre 3.6, it passes the ruins of the Byzantine monastery of San Nicola de Nemore, with an adjoining water source. Outside the built-up area, the Santuario della Madonna degli Angeli bears witness to the veneration of Saint James, the patron saint of paths and walkers.

Blessed Giovanni Liccio also shapes the annual calendar. His feast takes place on the last Sunday in May and the following Monday. The solemn Monday procession passes through Caccamo’s main streets and oldest districts. The annual Sagra della Salsiccia di Caccamo also adds a culinary highlight to the events calendar.
