Discover Carini: Church Art, Catacombs and Caves

Carini showcases Sicily through a diverse combination of sacred art, early Christian archaeology and protected cave landscapes. Between churches, historic buildings, underground sites and digital tours, visitors encounter very different ways of exploring the history of the town. Nature here also cannot be reduced to a single type of landscape: protected areas, limestone, caves and distinctive wildlife complement the cultural offerings.

Sacred Art and Historic Buildings

An important starting point for exploring the area’s cultural history is the Chiesa Madre, built at the end of the 15th century. Inside is Alessandro Allori’s painting “Adorazione dei Pastori” from 1575. There are also stucco works attributed to the school of Giacomo Serpotta, as well as a late-16th-century painting of the Madonna del Monserrato by an unknown artist.

The Chiesa degli Agonizzanti is also notable for its furnishings. Its rich stucco decoration with putti is attributed to the school of the Serpotta family. Frescoes depicting various scenes from the life of Mary are attributed to Filippo Tancredi and, in part, to Filippo Randazzo. The Chiesa del SS. Rosario was built between 1566 and 1570 with the support of Gilberto La Grua Talamanca. This late-Renaissance Sicilian religious building later received Baroque additions and valuable decorations. Its artworks include a painting of San Domenico in Soriano from 1684 by Francesco Camaro.

The Baglio di Carini points to further historical layers of the town: in the 13th century, it served as an operational center for the local tuna fishery and the agricultural activities in the surrounding area. In the 16th century, the baglio was transformed into a defensive fortress with a watchtower. Daily opening hours of 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. were given for Castello La Grua Talamanca.

Catacombs, Mosaics and New Forms of Interpretation

The early Christian catacomb of Villagrazia di Carini is an underground complex dating from the 4th century AD, with galleries and cubicles decorated with frescoes. The Museo della Catacomba preserves finds from the early Christian cemetery as well as from the Late Antique and early medieval settlement of San Nicola.

The Mosaico Galati belonged to the reception hall of a wealthy domus in the Late Roman settlement of Contrada San Nicola. Together with the mosaic fragment N.I.47275, it was displayed in an exhibition pavilion in the former cloister of San Rocco. Advance booking was required to view these two mosaics; the listed hours were Monday to Thursday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon.

Tours in the Circuito del Sacro are conducted by specialized personnel, including art historians, architects, archaeologists and students. Along the route from Castello La Grua Talamanca to the prehistoric caves, the interactive trail “Carini città parlante” provides information about the monuments located there. Signs with QR codes and the Flico Official app provide descriptions and podcasts in Italian and English. The web app also offers audio guides, texts and videos in French, Spanish, German and Japanese. Guided virtual tours in a 360-degree virtual room enable people with motor disabilities to explore the monuments virtually.

Caves and Protected Nature

The Riserva Naturale Integrale Grotta dei Puntali lies in Mesozoic limestone on the slopes of Monte Pecoraro. Another focal point is the Grotta di Carburangeli, recognized as a geosite since 2017. Established for its protection, the Riserva Naturale Grotta di Carburangeli preserves a cave of speleological, paleontological and biological interest.

The Grotta di Carburangeli extends underground for approximately 400 meters and runs horizontally. Water filtration has created stalactites and stalagmites there. The cave is also home to bats from the Vespertilionidae and Rhinolophidae families. Thus, Carini’s spectrum ranges from art-historical interiors and archaeological evidence to geological features, each with its own history.
