Isnello among starry skies, a gorge and sacred art

Isnello combines astronomical themes, geological landscapes and a remarkable concentration of sacred art. GAL Hassin is an astronomical centre in Isnello; at the same time, the sky above the town is considered suitable for astronomical observations. Experience geology and discover local craftsmanship

The Sentiero Geologico Urbano Isnello leads through the historic centre and onwards to the Gola d’Isnello. The trail was created to open up the Gola d’Isnello as a geosite. It is a significant example of a geological formation created by river incision. For your travel planning, this trail therefore combines orientation in the historic centre with a direct insight into the geological character of the surrounding area.

Another facet of the town is revealed by the Museo Trame di Filo. It presents traditional prototypes and original creations connected with the tradition of sacred weaving and household textiles. The museum also continues to use the old techniques of Filet or Modano and Sfilato, dating from the 15th century. Isnello’s tourist information office is also located in the Museo Trame di Filo, bringing cultural content and local orientation together in one place.

Churches with medieval and Baroque traces

The historic heritage can be seen in several churches, each with its own history. The Chiesa di San Michele was probably built between 1300 and 1400 and has a finely painted wooden coffered ceiling from the 17th century. The Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore dates from the late 14th century. One of its distinctive features is a marble sculpture of the Virgin Mary, created in 1547 by the Sicilian school.

The Chiesa dell’Annunziata has medieval origins and was renovated at the beginning of the 18th century. It houses a marble statue of the Annunciation and the Archangel Gabriel from the Gagini school, an organ dating from 1765, and a painting of the Nativity attributed to Zoppo di Gangi. The Chiesa Madre di Isnello dates from the 15th century and adds another important testimony to the town’s history to this ensemble.

The Chiesa del Rosario also has a special historical connection: it once belonged to Dominican friars and was added to the palace of the Princes of Isnello towards the end of the 16th century. The church also contains a 16th-century painting by the Flemish artist Simone de Wobreck, as well as a magnificent liturgical vestment embroidered with gold, silk and coral.

Festivals, processions and regional cuisine

The sacred tradition of Isnello includes the Good Friday procession, during which the final three images of the sacred representation of the Casazza once again form part of the procession. La Luminaria is a large fire lit in Isnello’s main square on 24 December. The culinary festivals also have their own distinctive character: at the Sagra della Frittella on 29 April, artichokes, fresh broad beans, peas and wild fennel are cooked in large containers. The Sagra delle Fave di San Pietro takes place on 29 June.
