Ficarazzi between culture and landscape

The history of Villa Merlo can be explored in particular detail. It is a villa converted in the 18th century from a 17th-century baglio that served both as a seasonal holiday residence and as a centre of agricultural production. The complex includes mills, presses, a chapel, wells and a lemon grove. The villa was not merely a residential building, but was also connected to various areas of earlier production and supply.

The aqueduct on the Eleuterio

An aqueduct with 17 pointed-arch spans over the Eleuterio River is still visible near the tower of Ficarazzi. In the past, the aqueduct carried water to the village and powered a mill used to process sugar cane. In Ficarazzi, the river therefore appears in two clearly distinct contexts: as a reference point for the preserved structure and as part of the landscape, whose eastern area belongs to the Conca d’Oro.

Festivals and local food culture

The events calendar also reveals different sides of the town. The programme of Ficarazzi Street Food 2025 included show cooking and tastings celebrating Sfincione di Ficarazzi. For your travel planning, the event’s specific local connection is particularly interesting, as it is established through a named dish. The Festa del SS. Crocifisso delle Grazie takes place on 14 September. The historical performance “La Castellana” reenacts the donation of the valuable crucifix to the parish priest of the mother church and is presented every year.
