Gibilmanna combines sacred art, Franciscan history and trails through the Madonie landscape. The Santuario Maria SS. di Gibilmanna is located at an altitude of around 800 metres on the slopes of Pizzo Sant'Angelo. The sanctuary and Franciscan heritage

The Santuario Maria Santissima di Gibilmanna is a three-aisled church with side chapels. Its present structure probably incorporates the original Benedictine church. The marble effigy of Mary with the Christ Child is attributed to Antonello Gagini and dated to the 16th century. A restoration carried out in Gibilmanna in 2014–2015 also uncovered an older image of Maria Odigitria, which had been hidden beneath a so-called Byzantine icon.

The historical surroundings include the Convento dei Frati Minori Cappuccini di Gibilmanna, founded in 1535 by Father Sebastiano da Gratteri. The Museo Fra Giammaria da Tusa is housed in the restored former stable of the monastery attached to the Santuario Maria Santissima di Gibilmanna. Its ten rooms are each named after a friar. The collections include Franciscan artefacts, valuable sacred vestments and furnishings, devotional offerings, as well as objects from other cultures.

Particularly unusual is a handcrafted organ with reed pipes from the 17th century, which experts consider to be a unique example in Europe. The library of the Capuchin fathers Fra Gesualdo da Bronte also preserves incunabula, 16th-century books and volumes from the 17th and 18th centuries. The 17th-century Capuchin catacombs are dedicated to the hermit Giuliano de Placia. They occupy the basement of the Madonna Chapel and part of the church.

Trails through the landscape

Gibilmanna is also a notable point along the Via dei Frati. Stage 8 leads via Castelbuono, Isnello, the Santuario Gibilmanna and Cefalù. From the sanctuary, the Via dei Frati continues to the Sentiero Salvabosco and, after a mountain section, descends towards Cefalù. For trip planning involving different interests, this offers both a cultural and a landscape-focused view of the surroundings, without the two experiences having the same character.

Trail 603, “Sentiero Ferla – Bivio Pianetti”, begins in the equipped area of Pianetti at Pizzo S. Angelo. The Santuario di Gibilmanna is located 200 metres before the trailhead. The trail is 7 kilometres and 243 metres long and offers views over a valley with forests, cultivated fields and artificial lakes. This precise distance helps you distinguish the trail as a separate undertaking from the longer Via dei Frati.

Name and festival tradition

The name Gibilmanna derives from manna, which was obtained from the nearby ash forests. From 1970 onwards, the festival of the Madonna di Gibilmanna was held on the first Sunday in September. Together with the sanctuary, museum and trails, this creates a destination whose special character lies not only in a single building, but in the interplay of religious tradition, collections, historical details and mountain landscape.
